I got curious and checked my bank account. We paid $243 in registration fees for a 2007 VW GTI just last month. And the GTI is probably 20-25% of the value of a Turbo. So, $1200 sounds about right. I can't believe other states are so much cheaper; it's a joke!

WOW, I'm in Northern CA (Bay Area) and just re-registered my 03 996TT 1 month ago for ~$700. $1200 sounds insane! Perhaps some horrible SoCal local tax?!? Yikes!

I registered mine in Nov 2009 and it was around $600... didn't get to $700. 2002 Turbo.

I'm guessing the other poster had a late fee involved then because he said it won't be that much next time. Either way, still ridiculous if you know that other states charge $40?! Guess you gotta pay to play in CA.

But, to get back on topic, any more opinions on long term reliability ?

Yeah that rate doubled in May 2009 was Vehicle License Fee.

It went from 0.65% to 1.15% of "original purchase price".

I'm guessing my car's previous owner only had to pay around $630 for VLC which is a part of yearly registration in CA.

They give you a 'break' by reducing the 'original purchase price' yearly by their percentage not according to 'market value' so according to them my car is worth $97130 which they based my VLC of $1117 for this year. With this, I think I am going to pay more than my father's 07' S550.

With misc. fees added up, it's $1184 for this year. I wish they based it off KBB or something then we'd get a huge break on this registration.

Do you know your car's original purchase price? maybe that's why there is a difference between yours and mine. I think mine was around $140,000. It has x50 and pccb so maybe that's keeping the 'purchase price' in their equation high. I don't know. I actually went to DMV to talk because I thought this was way too high but they told me there was no late fees or anything. They told me my last owner paid around 850 before rate increase so that made more sense. You can pm me as well. Thank you.

Don't feel too bad, Cali registration was $876. Didn't our last Govenor get recalled over high registration fees. How soon we forget. Vote all the bums out of office.

Also, not beating on it too hard, how many miles could I expect these motors to last (with proper maintenance of course)? 100k, 150k, 200k ? When I get one, I plan on keeping it around for many years.

Thanks!!
The one thing that is reliable is your going to mod it which is both fun and expensive. Enjoy.

996tt are very reliable, the non-turbos had some problems with the blocks.

This car was designed to be driven. Not just for a weekend when it's sunny but all the time. The engineering of the 996T is simply amazing. W/ the proper maintenance it will last longer then you will want to keep it.

Well, that sounds very good then. Another concern to check off the list
