Question Engine Start Up...

Both manuals for the cayenne and GT3 and I am sure the Turbo say that you should drive the car immediately after start up and do not let it warm up from idle. What's up with this??? Common sense would tell you that it's better to let it warm up a little prior to driving, especially since the idle rpm's are higher. In the past I wait for the rpm's to decrease to the normal idle speed prior to driving it. Is this hurting my babies??? Anyone have any insight on this???

i thought the same thing

but as i was told from fellow M3 owners, its better to just get in and drive your car. Obviously no high revs, just mello driving

Wow, I just read it in my manual. I guess I missed that part. Thats been one of my pet peeves, driving with the engine cold.

It's to appease the EPA - cats warm up faster driving down the road, reducing cold start emissions. Trade off is ? engine wear before things have a chance to warm a bit. I hope they replace the voltmeter with an oil temp gauge ( like in the C-GT which uses same gauge cluster ) so that we can nail it as soon as the oil temp hits 150 ( lags water temp a bit so you can't go by the latter ).

I agree, let it warm up till the initial start rpm's die down to the normal idle rpm's. It's only a minute or two. Then drive off. I agree that it's not good to let the car idle for longer periods, but 2 minutes to get the idle revs in the normal zone seems to be the prudent thing to do prior to driving and it gives the oil time to heat up a bit for better lubrication...
