The Excellence article is online!

Congrats to the EVO-700 kit! 11.012 at 133.87
but,
"Frederick’s Evolution GT700 nabbed third place despite its huge lag and multiple fault codes. Up an onramp, this 996 surprised me with how much lag there was before the boost kicked in; it was like driving a 930 all over again."???

"And while this Turbo was running fine, cycling through four major fault warnings on the dash didn’t inspire confidence. "???

Regarding sharky

"Before we forget: Internet chatter predicted that the Akkurat Turbo Tip would win this contest because of its automatic transmission. But this 996 rode like a boxcar and had frightening clunks emanating from its front strut tops."

"Too bad it feels like a 1986 Camry with 300,000 miles…" ???

This doesn't sound right to me at all - what am I missing?

"I feel like I'm taking crazy pills" --- Mugatu

..
The next run sent the crowd into a tizzy, with the Seal Gray monster shrugging off the 1/4 in just 11.092 seconds at 140.87 mph
..

That is serious horsepower right there. 140+ MPH is really hauling.

From reading this article.... it seems like the US tuners had more problems this time around then in aprils' European car shoot out-clash of the titans. I said it before and I will say it again... I am shocked that no one got into the 10's... and I do not mean 10..97... i mean mid 10's. Ive been reading online(this year) all this chatter how their cars are in the tens... all I can say is - in Sharky's words " its not that easy".
I would expect alot more from 600+ rwhp turbos.
I just dont get it.. can anyone shed some light?

With a 2 second 60 no one will be in the 10s. You run the 1/4 and I have since I was 15 and I can tell you unless you are supporting Alcohol meth car you can't snap 10s without a better 60. All things considered the drivers did better than I expected.

why were they so slow at 60 foot?
was it the drivers? did any tuners drop psi out of the tires?
One more thing- what kind of toyo tires did they use? were they more along Michelins pilot sport cups, or more along regular radials that come on our stock turbos?
thanks

Diminishing return

A point beyond which the application of additional resources yields less than proportional increases in output.

I was told that there was a problem with the wheels spinning inside the tires in some cases ....

Yes, the tires were spinning on the rims. I did drop the pressures in mine and the tires moved over 13 inches on the rim. The fronts about half of that. We know because we marked them.

The tires were the equivalent to a PS.

Bottom line is these guys are track drivers, not drag racers. Big difference.

Yep, what good is all that extra power if it can't be utilized? As well, it often comprises the performance in other areas that Pcars are designed to shine in. I've not had one of these 600 or 700+ hp TTs on the track, but I'm kinda skeptical that you can modulate the go pedal w/ that kind of "turbo" power to be useful rather than prohibitive.

Some of us track our turbos... so too much power is not a good thing.... but most of us just hot rod on the streets... it seems.
Too much power(600+hp) is a relative statement... I like HP. I dont track my TT often... just have fun going home from work @ 3am.
Ive had my stage 3 for 30k miles... Ive hit a wall... need more power.

There are much cheaper ways to build a streetrod, just ask the ricers.

i agree... Im actually going to do one.... evo 8 mitsu... for $11k into tuning with stand alone system, clutch, turbo , fuel mngmt, all the piping and custom ointercooler,etc.... it does 10.5 sec. without NOS. My friend is a tuner.. his does 8.71@156mph. I was there in August of this year.
I thought my car was fast... not anymore.
Happy New Year to all,
markski

HAHAHA So give us the car back to send to the "mother land". I would say you'll be pretty damn happy with the car at that point .
Evan
PS-Since I finally recieved my Excelence this week, I have to say they described our car PERFECT.
