2-4 shift

Hello everybody!

I had a quick newbie question.

I was driving my car today and had an open road in front of me so I did WOT in 2nd gear and tried to shift into 4th then grrrrrrrinding noise came from the box and it didn't go in right away. I thought I made a mistake so I tried it again from WOT in 2nd to 4th and it grinded the gears again. It has no problem going WOT 2nd to 3rd then to 4th but 2nd to 4th isn't working. Maybe I'm tricking the car too much

Is it because the syncros aren't ready? or is my tranny bad? I didn't have this problem with bmw so I don't know what's causing the problem. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

My box goes 2-4 without a problem, but I have not tried it WOT. I will try and post back.

yeah, they work flawlessly when going at road legal pace. I just have problem when shifting at redline in 2nd to 4th.

hi, is there a beneficial reason why you are missing 3rd gear out?

I think when hes topping 2nd out and doesnt want to keep going through 3rd is what he is asking. No sense putting 3rd gear in at 4500rpm (or whatever rpms) if u just want to coast after your 2nd gear pull...

I cant say I have thought to much about this much but I know my driving style would have me doing the same thing during any given season and I can't remember an instance where I had an issue.

yup, forumtdot is on the money. I was just flooring it in 2nd and didn't want to go any faster on local road so I just skipped to 4th and it did that nasty grind. It shifts without any problems if I go 2-3-4 at WOT or 2-4 at moderate pace, but if I shift at redline in 2nd to 4th, it's having problems.

So go 2nd full throttle, push clutch go into 3rd and then into 4th, release clutch, guarntee no problems. Something to do with the synchros line up from 3rd to 4th much better than 2nd to 4th I'm sure.

nothing wrong with the tranny. the tranny wants to go up the gears not skipping. you wot in 2nd and when you push in the clutch your synchros are ready to insert the proper matched next gear, then you trick them with a different one at a different synchonization speed and ram it in, grind. If you want to do that you have to rev match. You either clutch and shift in two gears then let clutch out or you rev match to go into higher gear which is tougher. think of each gear being roughly 1100- 1500 rpms apart. If you were in 2nd at 6600 rpm and you shift into 3rd, your rpms drop slightly while you shift and the rpms needed are close enough. If you shift into 4th from 2nd at 6700rpm the differential speed needed is much greater and grinding occurs. If you let rpm drop even more, you will be ok, but you have to wait. just practice this gently until you get the hang of it.

yeah, I tried to wait a little for rpm to drop and it worked fine. I needed a clarification what's causing the problem and that my box isn't the only one doing that, haha. Thanks for your explanation Prche951.

no problem. I hate that gear grinding sound more than any sound a car can make, except maybe rod knock
