Alignment is OK, but tires pull to the side?
Alignment is OK, but tires pull to the side?
About 4000 miles ago I had four new Sumitomos installed by a reputable European cars specialist shop – they primarily handle all kinds of high-end Mercedes but see more than a trickle of Porsches as well.
At the same time I had a four-wheel alignment done in the hope that it would correct the slight pull to the left that affected the ride on the old PS2 tires that I was replacing.
Upon picking up the car I immediately felt that the difference in ride compliance with the new Sumitomos versus the older PS2s was – in a word – monumental (the older tires were positively SHOT). The car did retain, however, a slight (and a mean far slighter than before) pull to the left, even after the new alignment: all in all it was something I could easily live with and I decided to keep the status quo.
4000 miles later (just the other day) I went back to the same shop to have all four wheels swapped side-to-side (note: these tires are asymmetrical but not directional) and guess what? Now the car pulls ever so slightly to the right. While I am not an alignment guru I’d say that this is a fairly clear indication that something is amiss with the tires, no? But if that’s the case, what could that be? Keep in mind that the tires seem to show generally even wear, although one rear tire seems to have just a slight bit less treat left that the other – that is, the right rear tire when the car was pulling to the left.
Any ideas?
