I've read many of the 997 TT wheels on a 996 threads on this forum, but I see a fair amount of conflicting information. I just bought a 2003 TT and it came with 997 TT wheels.

I started digging into this issue because the car has a pretty significant shimmy at 65 - 85 mph (can be felt both "seat-of-the-pants" and in the steering wheel depending on speed / road conditions).

I had simply planned to get the wheels rebalanced as a first line of defense, but now I'm concerned about my front diff. The tires have plenty of tread left and wear seems pretty good (a bit more wear on the inside edge, but nothing crazy).

I would rather not drop $1000 on a pair of rear 315-25-19 tires if I can get away with it, but I also don't want to destroy my front diff - can't imagine that is particularly cheap to repair.

Thoughts, advice, suggestions?

Do any owners have first-hand experience with front diffs cooking and could share their experience?

I had the same shimmy on my car. Turned out that one wheel was way out of balance.

Does the shimmy stay with it all the time at those speeds? In other words, does it go away after 5 or 6 miles? Is the shimmy there every day or do you only notice it when the car has been sitting for a week or more...? What kind of tires... ? I had a similar problem that haunted me for about 6 months and spent a lot of money trying to figure it out. Turns out that when I let my car sit for 4 or 5 weeks the tires got a little flat-sided... Just a possibility...

 

My 997tt wheels came with my car too. I've never had any kind of shimmy. My first thought is one of your wheels is out of balance. Maybe you threw a wheel weight off?

 

I drove the car 1400 miles from Tampa to Boston - definitely not a flat spot

All four tires and wheels are currently sitting in my SUV. I'm taking them to get balanced tomorrow. Hopefully that will resolve the problem.
