Help - What is your VOLTmeter Reading ? My car dies on City Drive
jpflip gives good advice.
In my case my alternator failed at 20,000 miles - others have had the same problem at similar mileages, most likely caused by corrosion resulting from washing the car then leaving it to dry.
I got a new replacement alternator for $200 from eBay and changed it myself - took a couple of hours but not difficult.
I still have the original alternator and suspect the problem is just the regulator which could be changed for $30. I opted to change the whole unit just to be sure.

Hello all,
I notice something new and strange. Yesterday, I tried to start the car, it started good and I notice that my voltmeter is reading a solid 13.6-7 Volts. When I open the cabriolet top, it drops to 13.0V and when it's done, it goes back to 13.7 volts. When I drive for the first 20min, it reads 13+V
Now, after about 20 minutes, the volt meter reads drops 12.2 Volts on freeway...
What's the deal ...

Just did some reading to compare
Battery only: 12.3 volts.
Switch 'on" : little drop to 12 volt (daytime running lights on)
engine start at idle: 14.00
engine running + lights switch "on": 13.85
engine running + lights + a/c full : 13.60
engine running + lights + a/c + high beam : 13.5
engine running at 1500 rpm goes a little bit up to 13.6
And when I remove the complete load (a/c , high beam, lights etc) goes up to 13.9...
I think your alternator is not at fault. Tomorrow before you start your car take a look at the battery voltage to see if it is below 12 volts. If it is , you got either a dead cell or a short. Did you retightened the lead to the starter or better did you clean the lead and reinstalled them with good torqued? Also battery connectors , are they clean?
