Ive been searching and looking all over this forum, and it seems to be everyone is mostly using 5w-50 if they can find it, if they cant there using 15w-50. mobil 1 i guess im going with mobil 1 15w-50 since there is no 5w-50 in sunny california and my m3 uses 15w-50 anways might as well use the same oil for both + its cheap at walmart

I'm no expert, but I thought the whole idea of lower weight oil was to provide proper lubrication, expecially during cold start. The lower weight oil provides turbo lubrication in a more timely and efficient manner than a heavier oil.

I guess what I'm saying is, if the M3 calls for 15w50, that doesn't necessarily mean every other car should use the same.

The motor uses the oil as a hydraulic fluid of sorts for the valves...so it you go too thick, that might be a bad thing.....vanos, etc. So, I stay at 5w-50.

Been fine so far. 0w-40 was good too. 5w-40 turbo diesel is my other oil and what I use in my other cars, so I might just stay with it. Nice oil.

For now, I am using 5w-50 M1.

Im no expert either but from what ive been searching all night, people have been using either 5w-50, 15w-50, 5-40 turbo diesal, and since i cant find the 5w-50 around california, im going with the 15w50. and not because im using it on my m3, but from what ive been reading on this forum.

I'm gonna stick with 5w40 M1 Turbo Diesel. I think oil talk in general is overdone anyway. If your tracking your car, I would be more concerned, for most everyone else, I would just stick with what's on the approved oil list.

Just my opinion.

+1 on the Mobil 1 5w40 turbo diesel, it has the zinc, phosphates and all the other other stuff good for motors that was removed from the normal oils. Like Jeff mentions, too thick oil will damage any oil pressure activated valve control such as vvt-i, vanos, vtec and any other v acronym you can think of ...etc...

just some words of warning on Mobil1. The 15w-50 you were getting was under the Extended Performance Series. This had more lubricants in it (zinc, phosphates, etc). The 15w-50 is now ONLY available in the standard series. This means less lubricants. While not an issue for most cars, for Porsches that rev high (and if you EVER take it on the track) it is a good idea to have these. Also look to the Mobil1 race oils. They have a 0w-50 coming out any day that has all the lubricants in it (and a 0w-30 already).

From Mobil webisite

Automotive street use oils that meet the latest industry standards are required to have a lower level of Zinc and Phosphorus anti-wear chemistries than oils formulated years ago. The latest automotive street use engine oils are designed to be compatible with emission control equipment. Mobil 1 Racing oils are formulated with anti-wear (Zinc/Phosphorus) chemistries at twice the level of automotive street oils to provide enhanced protection of highly loaded valve train systems found in some race engines. Based on the high level of anti-wear chemistries, Mobil 1 Racing oils are not recommended for street use.

Valvoline VR1 5w-50 should be great for our cars. It's got an approved viscosity and it has a lot of anti wear additives (racing oil). It's very rare here but I will search for it for my next oil swap!!

The concern with high zinc is that is bad for your cats. Race cars do not have cats.

I'm sticking with Kevin's recommendation of M1 5 w 50...

Mobil 1 stats as of 5/27/10

FYI

Thanks Viperbob for the heads up. Now, will that zinc and phosph. trash the cats????

Inquiring minds want to know. Cats .... looks like 0w-40 and 5w-50 are both 1000/1100 oils....car seems to like 5w-50. No oil loss, etc. If the car is happy, I am happy.

states at some point.

Valvoline VR1 should be good for street cars too. It has lots of antiwear add. but it seems to be recommended for street use too (from what I read on their website).

As for CAT issues....Failing cats are better than failing engines....IMO.

Going catless should be the solution...you can use racing oil and leaded racing fuel..
