Neither is Subi. Wrong choice.
A good candidate to traffic light race with kids in stride Mustangs though.

Another good candidate. Nissan Skyline. I read up on one once with 1000 RWHP but again had spent at least 996tt territory money on it.

"Older disabled gentleman"

Damn, where are all of these guys hiding. The only older disabled gents I know roll around in a hover-round, not a Cosworth Subie!

For drag racing, and something that would be along the lines of the STi, why not look into a modded Supra turbo? There a lot of us that have come from that car, and I'm pretty sure you won't find any of us knocking it for anything.

Would do great at the dragstrip, and roll-ons won't be any issue either

Long time lurker and first-time poster chiming in here. I currently own an '08 STI (looking at maybe a 996TT or 996GT3), and if I were in your position, I'd look into something different for a strictly drag-racing platform.

I'm going to have to second what 's14roller' suggested, a nice AUTO MKIV Supra. That motor is probably as 'bulletproof' as the 996TT's motor, and the slushbox can be easily built with a high stall and still handle the power that you want to put down. Plus, even with a big snail, you could give it a shot of nitrous to help it spool off the line. I really think that the 2JZ-GTE powerplant is going to be far superior in terms of reliability than the subie boxer motor at the power levels you're going to be achieving.

I also had a 1997 RSP SC300 with a JDM 2JZ-GTE swap + some mods and a 3,800 RPM stall from Boostlogic, and it was a ton of fun to drive.

3. These cars are a money pit. It seems as though some of the highly modded ones are always in the shop.
4. I would like to know who has tuned it.

If it is a reputable tuner and you get a lower price, I'd say go for it if you understand that the car is a money pit and expect things to break from time to time.

Best of luck with your decision. STi's are great cars.
Great advice all around here. I have an '04 STi that's pretty well tuned and put 45k miles on it before the motor and turbo blew. That's a whole nother story. I 2nd everything amg destroyer said. This car was obviously built with no expense spared, but you could build one that's just as fast for a lot less. This just has every single mod on it and the price reflects it. There's no need for all of that in a drag car. If you're considering an STi as a drag car, start from scratch and pay attention to weight.

Sean- how fast are you trying to go? I would not go with a subaru for drag racing. Axles break when you start using drag radials and so do the trannies. Not to mention that Even though that particular has ALOT money invested into, it is just too much to pay 45k for a subaru.

Now again it depends what you are looking for but for 30k you can get an 2006 E55 AMG and make go low 11s for $2-3k it will be able to do that on the street and at the track. The car will have 4dr and can be used as multi purpose vehicle, family etc. Those car launch great. I used to cut 1.6x 60' on 255/50/16 Mickey Thompsons. The car is so consistent, that it is virtually unbeatable on the street even when racing more powerful cars.

Not into MBs - look into an 03-04 Terminator. You can pick a nice one up between 15-20k, parts are cheap, power adders are cheap. Starting out with a capable motor is always nice.

Turbo supra is always there too

Thanks everyone....you are probably saving me a lot of money.

I will probably relay the info I have gotten here and say I will have to pass.

I will also politely say that I could pay $35K if he really wants to let her go (he is set on buying a z06 for 45K) and apologize for lowballing him.

Sean,

Cool car that is really a money pit.
Sell the M3 and get yourself a fast comfortable sedan
(tuned E55 like S-351 just sold, C63 AMG, or something like that),
as you would kind of be "tripling up on cars like my next door neighbor that
has Lexus LX570, Q7, and a Defender 90...)

If you are wanting to stay import and in that price range you could get an Evo that would walk all over that STi.

We build a lot of high horsepower Subaru's through here. Cosworth is top notch. Is it a stock sleeved motor? If not without Pinning the block, or sleeves it will not hold long term going over 26psi. The Subaru's are nice cars to trick out. But I don't suggest them for drag racing if you want to go faster then low 11's.

Good luck with your hunt!
