Unhappy Carbon parts warping.....

I know I live in Florida, but my car is not a daily driver.

My carbon upper console has warped on the top and the carbon defroster vents are peeling...

I can get them replaced, but from what I have been told this is a common thing and will happen again. Anyone else have this problem?

Hmm.. maybe I should sell the rest of the carbon parts and put in painted AS... this maybe the best option...

Eric if you read this... what do you have painted AS for the interior in stock..

Same problem here. You can (I did) get them replaced under warranty. The stuff is over priced plastic, it is "carbon fiber look". Sort of disappointing when you think about it. Look at the money it costs as an "option".

Gary,
I had this problem and it is easily solved if you want to tackle it yourself. Remove the pieces, go to home depot and buy two part epoxy and a few carpenter's pistol grip clamps with the yellow rubber pincers and black steel rods. I think Stanley makes them. Mix the epoxy on a piece of cardboard (twin tube dispenser makes the proportions easy), apply between the delaminated edges and clamp them together. Wait the specified curing time for the epoxy purchased, remove the clamps and reinstall. That fixed mine. Voila!

Gary, that really blows. What we've found as we rolled out the carbon products is that what we're doing is far beyond what Porsche does at the factory. I suspect the factory goes about as far as they can cost wise, then stops. If they went the extra mile, you would not have this sort of problem.

Our carbon stuff is costly to make, because we are going several steps beyond the norm in production. It should hold up.

I'd have your dealer replace those parts with factory parts again, and see what happens.

We have numerous parts in stock now in a variety of finishes. I would avoid silver on the defroster though due to reflections. But email me anytime and I can tell you what we have in stock or in production.

Thanks!

Thanks Ken,

But won't it just happen in another spot on the defroster covers? That is what the dealer is telling me. That also is not a solution for the upper console. It seems like it would break if I tried to clamp it down also as the edges are not just delaminated but curled.

I am going to get them replaced, but will mosy likly sell most of my carbon and change to painted or something else except the rear console ans shifter. Next time they warp or peel I may not be under warranty.

Gary,

Is this weather related? Like does your car sit out in the sun? Or is the humidity screwing with it?

Or is this just a "not very good quality" issue?

Gary,
I used this technique for all three pieces last year and it is still holding up. Porsche uses glue to adhere the fake CF to a plastic backing. The epoxy is far better and will not come free and release the CF. If you can get a dealer replacement, however, that is probably a better route.

The car does not sit out in the sun often.. It is from driving.... I use a reflecter on my daily driver since it is in the sun the whole time I am at work.

From the amount of people I have spoke to it seems to be a quality issue and I have seen other parts worse than mine for people that do park out more often. The dealer will replace it and I will do that, but if it is just going to happen again (as they say it will) I will sell the Carbon and go another route.

The car is garaged whenever I am not out. I never even leave it in the driveway when home. I have 18K in 30 months on the car... most in the last year... If I go to lunch or take it to the gym on a weekend it may sit in the sun but not for more than a hour or two.

Same thing happened to me when I left my car to get detailed and could not pick it up for a few days. The sun here in Virginia is not near as strong as FL. But it was replaced under warranty no questions asked.

I think we should continue to make Porsche replace the parts so maybe they will improve the process they use to manufacture these parts.

I agree, but my concern is once the car is out of warranty they will give me a hard time replacing them and I will be stuck. So I may be better of selling the new parts and changing the look. I also was told it takes Porsche forever to send the replacements.
