Trunk won't open via key

I can't open the trunk on my 01 996 Turbo via the key. The key will successfully lock/unlock the doors and once inside the car, the trunk release button works fine. However, I can't release the trunk by simply pressing the trunk release button on the key. Any ideas?

TIA

Either the battery is low, the transmitted in the key is toast or the receiver isn't working. Do you have a spare key to test also? If it happens with both keys, the problem is in the car.

Or you're not holding the button down long enough. There is about a 3 second delay
