Noob Z06 guy here asking 996tt questions
hey hows it going, i saw that you owned a C6 Z06 as well as a 996tt. I have been battling which one to purchase for months now. I just drove a 996tt and i think i may have built it up in my head so much that it didn't meet the expectations. it felt incredibly smooth, had great brakes but i really couldn't stand the driving position and felt like it was kind of slow (not slow by any means but i felt the weight of the vehicle). I'm coming from a 240 with a supra motor in it that layed down 395 to the wheels and weighed 29xx with me aboard, the car always felt very strong off bosst and really ripped in boost. I'm hoping to pilot a Z soon but i for comparison, but i'm curious if i missed the mark of the porsche. Any info/opinions welcome!
if anyone else would like to chime in i would love to here.
i'm a lurker so i don't have the ability to PM, haha so i figured i would post up something this evening. sorry if its wandering off topic a little bit.

Where abouts are you located in CT? I would love to pick your brain a little bit about the vehicle. For me this is a huge decision and i want to make sure it is an educated one. (again i would have pmed but no ability, haha)
Are the ergo's something that all porsche people know are mediocre and the overall driving experience is what does the overshadowing? I drove a Caymen S and started to understand the whole hype. But it had a much nicer feel in the driver seat, it was one of the most balanced cars i have ever driven. But boy did that thing lack the sauce.

Didn't you have a Ford Pinto as well?
Make every effort to drive (at a minimum) a lightily modded 996tt before you make any decisions. The stock power is lethargic...I lasted a week with mine stock. A simple flash (and exhaust if you can swing it) makes a huge difference (about another 50-70whp) as well as some light weight mods) There is stuff you can remove. These cars are easily modded and can be very rewarding. If after driving a modded one, you still feel you can't deal with the car and it's ergonomics...then move on...I've had Vettes, Camaros, Chevelles, Supras, Grand Nationals, etc...wouldn't trade my car for any of them back...

Yes, a stock 6TT will feel very slow. The beauty of these cars is that they have a detuned racing motor that is easily capable of reliably making double the stock HP.
However the basic 24/18 while fast is not really faster than a stock Z06. That is why I recommend to the OP that he go for one of the big boy set ups out of the box since that is likely where he will eventually want to be.

Bite me bronze sponsor from Houston...
My z06 is a c5 and is turning more and more into a track car its getting a 434 lsx and has a full Pfadt suspension. its hard to compare, The 996tt is just plain sweet, took it out to the Miller Motorsports Park for a track day with the PCA and it was amazing how well it handled it with no prep and bone stock. Temps stayed just where they always are, Brakes were prefect all day. The Toyo T1Rs and their 280 tread rating were hating me but the car was great. Glad that I can keep them both, but would keep the 996TT if I had to choose.
i expect to be able to get over the 600rwhp mark (80whp gain from where I am now) with 18Gs at the very least on this same dyno....which would put this car at a 150whp over a stock C6 Z06.
there are a several drivers that can pilot Z06s to amazing high 10s and low 11s stock at the track...which is amazing. however most i see at the track run in the 12s, which exactly what they run on the street. with a decent launch too.

wow thanks for all the replies, So the 997 shifter will make the "soup bowl" shifting action go away?
I read that on this forum and started cracking up
. . . then i used the soup bowl, and it wasn't that funny.

i'd have to disagree. basic k24/18 setup is definetly enough to beat stock Z06s. 60-130 times for 18g cars range from 6-6.6s and Z06 stock can do 7.9-8.6. i dynoed my ol' plain FVD K24 setup made 516rwhp, stock Z06s dyno 440-450 on the Dynojet I used.

I disagree, a K24/18g will beat a stock ZO6 no problem and this is from someone who has owned both. I have upgraded from the K24/18g and got rid of the C6 ZO6.
I do agree that a completely stock 996tt feels slow. A good quality flash transforms the car. It's literally night and day. I would try to drive a 996tt with a flash and see what you think. The car is much faster with a flash over stock.

Remember, the original question was about a basic 24/18 set up, not the full Monte.
But like I said, if you are doing all the supporting mods, might as well Go Gt30's.
