Anyone Know How Carfax Gets Information Reported?
Someone backed into my wife's car causing $1,200 in damage. Of course they fled the scene
Don't want this to show up on CarFax, since everything on there looks like a major collision (will be selling soon). The body shop doesn't report to them (small independent), and there is no police report.
Trying to decide whether to open an insurance claim.....do they report to car fax? If not, how does car fax collect information on damage?
Thanks

Most common for Insurance companies to report crashes above $750 to State DMV (Carfax collects data from all State DMV's. Expect an up to 6 month delay before events show up in the report. OE Dealers report emission service to Carfax. Lien Holders report as well (to DMV) most states have a requirement to report damage to DMV, if certain amount of damage has been exceeded. CA is $750. I work in a Body Shop in CA, and our industry usually does not report, the vehicles registered owner is suppose to report via DMV Form SR1. Considering that you probably have a deductible anyway, I would not file a claim...
