Installing 997 shifter assembly without alignment tool?

Hey guys, I've got a 997 shifter I'm ready to install and I've read through several threads and instructions, but I'm curious if I really need the alignment tool that comes from Porsche. If I mark the cables as recommended in the B&M instructions, will this suffice, or should I do something more to ensure proper alignment of the shifter. Thanks!

I have installed two with no tool and no problems. I counted the number of rings on the old one and installed the new one the same way.

So go for it!!!

The tool holds the shifter in neutral. It is super "floppy" without it. You should use the tool to hold the old shifter when you mark the cables, and then again when you install the new shifter.

I have a spare send me a PM if you want it.

Thanks for the advice guys. This was an easy job...I finished it last night in about 2 hours (going slow). Just marked the cables and everything went back together perfectly. I love the shifter. Much less effort to shift than the b&M I had in the car, slightly longer throws, but much smoother. My 997 unit is a bit unique as the previous owner had the shift rod cut down 10% and machined to accept the stock ****, for a little extra throw reduction. I love it. Thanks again.
