Header coating
CJV had mentioned many times that wrapping the header will reduce turbo lag.
How about coating the header?

The review on the current issue of Grassroots Motorsports (p. 172) stated that "you can touch the header at running temperature without burning yourself..." Sounds like some serious reduction of heat dissipation.
What do people think?

Yes coatings do work although I wouldn't suggest touching the headers while on a dyno. Maybe a half inch of an inch away when they are glowing hot.
Obviously coating and wrapping are best. If you are going to wrap make sure your headers are made of 421 stainless steel and have a thickness of at least 16 gauge metal.

Wrapping your headers with a tape looks gross and is an outdated method. Go to Jet hot and have them coated with the jet hot 2000 coating. I have tried other brands and they just tend to flake off after awile. Also I would not suggest touching your headers lol no matter what they tell you. Just thing how High your EGT temps get on pump gas under boost.

You have never seen a header coated by HP Coatings flake. If you have seen any header coating flake it was Performance Coating.
As for wrapping being outdated ............ did someone tell you that or do you have some documentated proof. Your statements don't jibe with my experiences at all.

As for "somone telling me" me about wrapping headers......I have installed over 30 turbo kits and that is from my expierences. A lancer Evu I did had them catch fire from an oil leak and ruined his hood and motor. He ended up on the side of the highway trying to dump snow on his engine to get it to stop. We also ran a jet hot on the team drag car I used to work for. It has 1600hp at the wheels. So for my documented proof, my comments were based on personal expierence with differnt car brands, setups, street cars and pro street drag cars.

This is not a flame. I would be interested in you providing exhaust temperatures of ceramic coated headers versus wraped headers versus ceramic/wraped combination. Running a certain product does not qualify as "new or outdated." I am not saying wrap is better. I am saying a combination is better than ceramic by itself. Furthermore, it was the oil or gas that was allowed to soak the wrap that caught fire. In addition, I hope anyone who plays with motor's in these hp ranges also installs a good fire surpression system. Most teams/myself would never allow the wrap to get soaked. If we have a leak we repair it. If the wrap is compromised ....... it is replaced. No one said performance is cheap or easy.
Your comments about ceramic by itself or wrap being outdated simply doesn't jibe with any of our exhaust tempertature tests. The combination delivered more heat to the turbo's ....... period. In addition, peeling isn't good, however simply "not peeling" doesn't award product good heat retention qualities either. Back to my earlier comment, you haven't seen a HP Performance 2400 Degree Coating flake.

As for HP Coatings, here are some of their credentials for motorsports. This does not count aircraft racing:
HPC has been used by the winners of:
13 - Indy 500 wins
14 - Daytona 500 wins
2 - IRL Championships
5 - 24 Hours of LeMans wins
9 - 24 Hours of Daytona wins
8 - NHRA Top Fuel World Championships
5 - NHRA Top Fuel Funny Car World Championships
17 - NHRA Pro Stock World Championships
14 - NHRA Pro Stock Bike World Championships
It also doesn't hurt that HPC is the one who started the whole coating thing.

Daniel,
When we conducted our tests Jet Hot wasn't offering anything over 2000 degree coating. I see from their website this has changed. It is obvious to me that I am not currently up to date with their product.

I had Kevin do a set of ported/polished stock headers for me in ceramic coating....
I never got to install them and sold them to a fellow board member (Ken - he has a TTX50 - I think username is Ken LOL)
PM him on his experience
