I sold my 993 to a guy in Ontario Canada. I sent him copies of all the service records, upgrade records, title on the car, proof any PCNA recall issues had been dealt with and a zillion pictures. He paid for a local PCNA dealer to PPI the car which came up clean. I insisted he come to Cali to drive it, but based on the documentation he bought it without even seeing it. (I had 3 other local offers for the asking price but each one was a typical used Porsche paranoid, paint micrometer testing, used oil analysis etc blah blah blah). He sent me a cashier’s check which cleared 2 weeks before a transport came to pick the car up. Do I recommend this type of transaction...not really. But once in a while trust wins out. Unfortunately there are too many shady people involved in selling used cars. I also bought a used MBZ that was both upside-down and delinquent on a lease. The seller gave me a cashier’s check for the deficient amount made out to the leasing company which I sent with my cashiers check for the purchase price. The leasing company was very accommodating providing me will documentation on releasing their lien prior to me send any money to them. This is much more difficult than buying car where the seller has equity at stake. I'd proceed with caution but advise your buddy to at least go see the car.

I've done it every way in the book. On my current Porsche and my old Lotus, I rolled the dice and won. I bought both from obvious enthusiasts with all maintenance documents sight unseen without a PPI and had it shipped.

For my old 996, I wasn't getting the warm and fuzzies so I ordered a PPI, liked the results, flew to S. Florida, brought a check for the full value to the sellers Credit Union. They gave him the change, I drove off with a car and a title.

I sold a couple of old cars on ebay that ended up going oversees. In each case, the buyer sent a wire for the full amount sight unseen and sometimes let it sit in my possession for months while they had the shipping arrangements made

996TTFred is infamous around these parts
The last 4 Porsche's that I purchased were out of state. I always purchased in the US but never let a few hundred miles stand in the way of the right car. I have even assisted with others purchasing which is fun as well. Keep us posted.
