Chipped 996 Turbo - K16s vs K24s
Been contemplating purchase of a 996TT. I've crossed paths with a couple of X50 cars. I know that Porsche advertises a bit more power for the X50 (450 vs 415 I believe).
What about on a chipped car? Would chipping the K16 car and K24 car even them out or is the larger K24 going to benefit just as much. I'm trying to put a value on X50 package, but it's not just about the $$$ since there are a lot less of them (and I'm in the Northeast, where there isn't a ton of stuff for sale to begin with). -Adam |
Go with the x50, larger is better!

If you are going to upgrade the turbos in the future, then go with whichever you want. If you are gonna keep stock turbos, then X50 would be best!

HI,,,IMO,,IF you are going to have the will power to keep it basically stock, only chip, exhaust and minor bolt ons, then the X-50 is better .But if you think you will not be satisfied and get the HP disease.....you will most likely change all of the original things that would have came with an X-50 anyways,,,So then a non X-50 car would be better.....Been there done that but with an X-50 which I said I wouldnt do at the beginning...lol.....Good Luck....

Also, if you want to upgrade your turbos "just a bit," it's cheaper to have the 24/18G mod done to an X50's stock turbos than to swap out for a whole new turbo. Pick your final horsepower goals, and if it's below a certain point(K24/18G level, whatever HP that is), the X50 will be cheaper. Having larger intercoolers isn't a bad thing, either.

In my opinion a chipped K16 is much more driveable than an X50, the X50 lags and needs 2800 rpm whereas the K16 will pull from 2100rpm.

very true..and not normally spoken of. on a stock K24 it almost seems like you can eat a bag of chips before boost comes on, whereas the K16 car boosts very quickly. Plain and simple if you plan on modding the car, go with the cheaper one. You are likely to go with complete new turbos anyway, so yours are cores and you get whatever you want in replacement. If the S is nearly the same price or close, then go with that one, but if it is a lot more, it's not worth it IMO. |
Go with X50. You can make an another 50HP with almost no additional cost + you get better intercoolers, GT3 oil pump and (I think) better fuel pump.

K16 if you plan on lots of mods...K24 for 18 or 20g upgrade if that's all you will like to do turbo-wise

fuel pump? where did you hear that one? Everything I have read and looked into says they are exactly the same. If you have this info bring it out, as it is good info.

I think the OP was trying to compare the tuned K16 vs the tuned K24. A tuned K24 can pick up significant boost over stock, especially with a good exhaust, though still not as good as K16's, it's not all that bad. I've had no problem with lag vs SC Mustangs or high hp NA cars, and I guess it obviously depends on how you drive the car, my car hardly see's 2k rpm at all. However I know it can be much faster which is why I'm upgrading to A28's or Billet K16's. |

All of those upgrades will help spool up, especially the intake plenum. I cannot believe how puny the stock turbo inlet piping is. |
