How do Ecu flashes work?

Coming from the Honda world where Ecu flashes don't really exist.

How do they work? Do they tune for your mods? Or is it just a premade
map loaded onto the stock Ecu?

Most of your critical engine controls are handled by the ECU including the timing advance curve, fuel delivery, boost limits, etc. Some ECU flashes are are just off the self and based on your stock vehicle (ie K16 or K24, manual, auto). The better flashes take into consideration your octane, intake mods, exhaust mods, and internal mods, etc. The better flashes allow you to upload the ECU file yourself and return your stock file as a back up (good for smog testing, dealer visits, or if you just want to return the car to stock). Most will also allow you additional perfomance files (for a charge) based on additional mods you may add at a later date or provide mulitple maps for mutiple engine mod configurations including simple things like running different octane ratings. Many Porsche flashes are done throught the OBD 2 port however some require you send in the ECU. When in doubt stay on the conservative side as boosted engines dramatically amplify performance mods and occasionally will end up exceeding the design specifications for the internals with unpleasant consequences.

My car already had a tune on it when purchased.

The previous owner said that he doesn't know what tune was on the car but he installed an evoms intake anyways. Also the original flash was done at a much lower altitude.

Should I consider doing another flash to take advantage of the intake? Altitude?
