997 SSK installed!
Today, I had some free time so I decided to install 997 SSK on my 996 turbo.
Prior to even purchasing the SSK itself, I read Mikelly's DIY guide many times. You can find his guide here. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...tal-996tt.html Thank you Mikelly for a great DIY guide. Everything was pretty straight forward except gear knob on my car didn't have any screws in them. I just had to pull it out. Doesn't take that much force and won't break any parts so don't be afraid to pull on it. I have a picture of the knob here. I didn't really need to pull up the boot like that. Just separate the boot from center console and pull the knob out. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j...2014.59.56.jpg The whole thing took about two and a half hours including a run to a hardware store to buy a socket wrench. Putting it back together only took about 25minutes. I actually didn't even have a socket wrench before today so even the most novices can do this. Just be careful when you count the threads and marking the exact point on the shift cables. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Z...2015.58.55.jpg Another thing I noticed was, when I was releasing the cables, I had to push the springs in and turn it clockwise to lock it in place so I could take the cables out. And when I put the 997 SSK in, I had to turn the spring counter-clockwise to lock the cables in place. With the SSK in, all I can say is WOW. There's bit more effort when you shift but the throw distance and feel is just in different universe compared to 996 shifter. Maybe the effort will decrease after some miles but it's all smiles right now. I wish I had done this mod a lot sooner. If you have any questions, I will try to answer them as best as I can but really, this is not a hard DIY so do it if you still haven't done it!! |

Some people say it is smooth for them. Mine is a bit notchy, but it feels super precise, which I love. I could probably adjust it but that would trial an error. The stock shifter is pure mush.
|
Nice!
|
Well done! Great upgrade!
|
I installed one in mine too. I love it as well. Shifting is crisp and tight. Total no brainer mod for less than $200.
|
nice. 997ssk = win. mine had no screws either...
|
i put a b & m short shifter in my turbo, no screws either, you def need to be careful when pulling the shifter off not to smack yourself in the head with it
i'm putting a b&m in my carrera tonight |
Getting mine installed next wednesday. I hope I like it!

great improvement over stock! shouldn't be "notchy" at all?
swap the gear oil. that should eliminate anything remotely resembling "notchy". |

Just out of curiosity: has anyone ever compared the 997 SSK internals to a B&M? Are the lever ratios different?
What makes the 997 SSK better? Is it a stiffer cage? |

I'm sure you have answered this before, but how does the (996?or 997?)gt3 cup shifter compare to the 997ssk.?

Yes. I had a B&M prior to the 997SSK. The B&M was utter garbage in comparison. I would not waste money on it. I can't recall what the ratios were as I removed the B&M from the car right away. The OEM 997SSK is a very nice shifter and much better than the B&M on all fronts. Just plain works well. I ended up selling the OEM 997SSK for $350. It sold in about 2 hours...

Numeric is also an option. Stainless steel sealed bearings everywhere and an aluminum CNC body. Not a difficult install. They sell cables as well if you want to further remove slop from the shifting but I felt no need to do so after installing mine. Shift ratio is adjustable though if you go for the shortest you must trim a bit of carpet under the shifter so allow for the throw. No complaints with mine at all but it's not cheap.
