Help with my key

I have two keys for my new (to me) tt.
One of them works in the ignition but the remote does not work. I am not sur eif the battery is dead or if it is just toasted.
I also have an old key from my 04 boxter (on right with yellow band). (note sold car a couple years ago without extra key)
I might be able to swap out the batteries which I will try tonight. But the tt key that is not working right now is really beat up. On one hand I probably shouldnt care if the key is beat up, but i do want a key with a remote unit.
Can I just change out the tops of the keys and have the 'head unit' programmed for my tt? what should I expect to pay for this if it is possible?
Thanks
scott

Update: I changed out the battery and got the fob to light up when the button is pushed , but still no response from the car. (other key works fine)
So the question remains, can i use my boxter FOB for my tt?

They only way I was able to get the remote to work again was with a PST2 or PIWIS. There is function to program the immobilizer and the remote. The process is difficult. You need to get from Porsche your IPAS codes and after every key got a 24 digits number. In my case since I am not the original owner I was not able to found the 24 digits number for the keys so I had to buy some new ones.... If you don't have access to PST2 or PIWIS the dealer is your best option. Durametric cannot do this function....

There are 3 components to the key. The physical key itself, a remote, and a transponder crystal. Both the remote and the transponder need to be programmed correctly to the car for the vehicle to operate. If your remote doesn't work or the key doesn't respond when you turn the ignition, then the key needs programming.

In the 997, I think the remotes come in different MHz frequencies depending if you own a Cayman, Boxster, or 911.

You could go to suncoast and buy the 911 design key conversion. Then you just 'transfer' the guys of your existing key (immobilizer, remote and the key blank) to the new head. Or I suppose you could just do that with your "old beat up head" and your new non-working key. Same process.

http://www.suncoastparts.com/product//911design.html. Instructions are available online somewhere. Pretty easy fix either way (parts you have or a new key head).

Oh, and if the remote is not working, you might just need to "reset" the remote to your car.

Sometimes, after a few days the remote will go into sleep mode. To wake it up simply unlock the door MANUALLY and then press the remote unlock within 10 seconds.

I've also heard that you can lock/unlock the car with the key....then get the key into the ignition within TEN seconds and turn the ignition on. But the above works for me so I've never tried this 2nd method.
