hey guys just got back from a local Ferrari F430 Viewing Party today and out of all the 30-50 cars that showed up there was one car that cought my eyes... it was a BEAUTIFUL car the SLR McLaren... as i was snapping my shots in the cold spring afternoon i was wondering how fast that car would be... the party went on... nice Ferraris (Enzo, 360 CSs, 575s, Messarati MC12) and well the star F430... after the viewing i wanted to leave early with my friend so we went to the back parking lot and picked up my 911 TTS... while i was about to leave the SLR fires up and comes out of his parking spot and got right where it should be in front of me... while i was thinking a very matured 50 years old adult with a $400,000 car will probably not give me a friendly go... probably will ignor me for a young guy with his daddy's car... but as he turned left on to the street he full throttled out of the parking lot... i followed him with out even thing about that my car is quite low... but thank god i didn't scrach or scrape anything... but anyways... as we were on the street i was holding 2nd gear at about 20-30mph ready for a battle with the MONSTER... and as the traffic cleared this guy punches it down the road... i punched it right after him and surprisingly i held up to about 110mph with him pulling me about 1-2 car length... while he was fishtailing abit i was also trying to get grip with my PSM and we did try this 20-110mph run for about 3 times with him pulling me 1-2 car length everytime... let me ask you guys something is this normal? or is this just because he couldn't get any grip off of his 335/25/19s? i know that with out a doubt after 130mph he will probably disappear but let me know your opinions guys as that i am really really excited about this result... and besides there are less than 10 SLRs in the city and is even less a chance that one will go with my crappy Turbo (Pocket Change for them?)

 

 

Sounds fun! Always keep a little video cam behind your seat. Never know when you're gonna need it...

 

Very impressive indeed, sounds like he was having some serious traction problems but hey what good is all that horsepower if you can't get it to the ground!

 

Due to their weight and front-engine/rear-drive platform, MBs (or BMW M cars) aren't great 0-60 cars. These cars truly shine in pulls from 60-80mph. In fact, I looked into trading my '01 E55 for a new '04 last year- bottom line is that the car didn't impress me as faster than mine until after 70mph.

The Turbo and Turbo S do well obviously off the line except for that damned wheel hop, but the best speeds for pulls are from 45mph or 70mph because you're well-spooled on the turbos in second or third gears, respectively. For stock, Porche Turbos are geared pretty correctly, too- in order to pull my old '02 Turbo when stock, Vipers or Supras had to be over 525-550hp, and Z06s had to be over about 450(usually intake and exhaust would give the Corvette such gains). My current Turbo S is markedly faster than my old Turbo- dunno how much is due to faster car versus the fact that I'm 85 pounds lighter.

I think if you and the SLR guy did a pull from 80-160mph, he would've walked you pretty badly. Well, I gave up street racing- someone gave me grief over it, and when I viewed my videos it scared be badly enough to agree with the guy. Also, Texas made street racing a jailable offense. So now I take it to the track, driving fast on the streets but not racing.

 

When my 5'8" 108 lb wife rides in the Turbo with me (5'11",138 lb ) , I can feel the difference in acceleration . The weightier guys here are missing some performance , no matter what the power if I'm driving your car !

thanx Ken... and for everyone else yes i agree that the SLR is much faster than my Turbo S i mean come on it is faster than the CGT right... anyways i was just really really surprised that i could have kept up with him and kept him very busy spot checking his rear view mirror glancing at a Turbo haha... but yes you guys are right street racing is very dangours and i realize that too but come on guys i won't be down the street hunting for Civics and Integras i am just a really slow driver that cannot miss on great action such as SLR CGT Murci ENZO thats it ok! haha

yes according to many magazines the CGT is slower especially 0-300km/h which i recall reading a magazine of almost 4 second gap between the CGT and SLR... but i don't know never driven one or even sat in one... but guys the MC12 photo is coming soon... didn't really have time to load them yet... thanx KLZ for posting some pix... and ya that magazine was MPH i may add from Buddy's link above... can't believe what a 4 second gap is like at 184mph??? maybe 20 car length?
