we burn a quart every 700 miles I say...
the blue smoke at start up is when you shut the car off and then turn it on when its still hot.. unburned oil...
if you have oil in hose from turbo to intercooler or in hot side turbine when its more likely the $70 check valve..

I think your over reacting...

0w40. I wanted to switch to 5w50 (or 5w40) last time it was in the shop, but they didn't have any. I'll have to start keeping my own supply around.

Many thanks Markski. That's the conclusion that I was coming around to. My mechanic said that he thought the turbos might be leaking and I wanted to make sure myself. There was also some oil that had fouled my plugs (which had admittedly been in the car for 28k miles/10 years). Next oil change, I may consider getting those check valves changed as preventative maintenance as well as upgrading to a heavier weight oil.

The other good news is that I don't have to do this turbo thing now. I haven't ruled out power adders into the future but I want to learn drive my 500bhp beast before i go crazy with the power. 500 is already a bit scary.

Thanks again, Markski.

You could probably tell if one of your turbos has some excessive shaft play. I think it could be a turbo seal issue. I have been through 3 sets on my 300ZXTT, (I push the hell out of that car with 25lbs boost and my factory engine had 140K miles before I decided to rebuild for more power) and it always starts with smoking at start-up and idle is the worst. You may even notice some oil speckles that blow out the exhaust that would be on the pavement. Does it seem to smoke more at idle? Mine had that same bluish white smoke when they went bad. It seems easy to tell if you can check for shaft play. Smoke will come out both tail pipes if you have an X-pipe or factory exhaust, but the oil speckles would be more on the blown side if it is in fact a leaking turbo. Inspecting the turbo it's self may be the only way to at least rule it out. You could easily replace the CHRA yourself. It's not difficult at all. Bummer on my Z though, because the engine has to come out.

When one of my turbos blew completely, I had oil through everything. It was in my intercoolers and piping.

No. The turbo blew while I was racing a Vette. I'm guessing dumping oil and backpressure because the turbines had dug into the compressor housing. It was a mess. It looked like a spyhunter smoke screen when that one went. LOL I lost.

Interesting. Kevin from UMW also suggested checking the airbox-to-turbo hose for oil to see if there was excessive leaking from the turbo seals. I'm getting no smoke at idle, just at startup. I guess this is normal... I'm not beating the hell out of it (i think). I'm still running K16s at stock boost at this point. I'll be flashing to 1 bar soon.

Thanks for responding.
