Someone definitely built something from a couple of chopped up cars. Why bring "everything" from a 997TT, then buy the rest from a 997 GT3 RS (those OEM parts probably costing as much as the indicated 997TT wreck), then put on a 996TT VIN. I'd like to see those dealer receipts.

Trunk does somehow look 996 dressed in 997 plastic, rear interior is definitely 996, but carpet and subwoofer and rear panel is not wear/age matching which implies even the VIN donor 996 wasn't "clean".

I like it other than the color, but not for almost 997 pricing.

Later, Steve

That is really bizarre. Strange vehicle history report too. Sold at auction in 2004 with 9,869, sits for 4 years before being titled with that same mileage. Then a few more title events without any change in mileage. One of those is "Corrected Title"...

I don't know why it would have gone to auction at 2yrs old and low mileage without some major issue

I think the 996 interiour suggests that it is a base 996.
So there have been no VIN swapping.
Shouldnt be to hard for the owner to present some photos from the rebuild.

There are only very minor differences between a late 996 "tub" (the complete body minus the exterior parts: fenders, quarter panels, trunk lid, engine compartment lid) and a 997 tub. The suspension is the same as well - again with very minor differences. Completely re-bodying a 997 on a 996 tub is def in the realm of the possible. Profitability is another question, tho.

The interior alone would fit physically except for door components. The problem is that CAN bus protocols changed between the 996 and 7, so nothing would work. And you can't change the interior wiring alone because then the interior components wouldn't communicate with the rest of the car. So you are back to re-bodying including all wiring harnesses to make it work.

Making a 996 look like a 997 externally is not too difficult but a lot of work to do right. There are several build threads here on the board.

I was. In another life. Financed college and law school by turning wrenches. And I know a bit about automotive electronics - I am involved with a project in developing and manufacturing diagnostic systems and electronic accessories for vehicles. At this point we sell for Land Rover only, tho.

But I know a lot about this topic in particular because I am in the process of exactly this type of conversion. I purchased a project roughly a year ago: a 996tt that the PO had completely dismantled and purchased all OEM body parts for to turn into a 997 GT2 RS. Due to work commitments on both my part and my body shop things have been going slower than I originally planned, but I should have the car back around Christmas. I will start a thread on the build process sometime soon.
