Hunting for the perfect 996tt - advise welcome
The key isn't 'flashed'...the issue is "did the flash alter the redline"... not all flashes change the rev limit.
Really? Over a year?
Holy cow. With the 991 around the corner, 997 cars will be close to this price in a year...

I wasn't in a hurry. I took my time to find out all I could about what I wanted in a Porsche. I love the look of the 964. I ended up deciding all of the modern day luxurys were more important then the love of that style 911. At 1st I wasn't fond of the 996 front at all. I decided a price that would be my top $$ and then looked for a car. I looked all over the country because there just isn't a lot of Pcars where I live. I found mine just outside Denver CO. I paid about 8 to 9K under the going rate at the time. It was well worth the long search. The car is modern enough for me that my next Porsche will be a 993 cab or a 964 targa.
Well, Saturday I went and drove 3 cars.
Car #1 was in Corona, CA. It looked like it was beat to hell on the racetrack. The owner installed a GT3 RS transmission - which tells me (combined with the "I'd rather be racing" license plate frame) that it has most likely been abused. When I test drove it and downshifted from 3rd to 2nd gear, the shifter started shaking. When I asked the salesman about it, he said it could be the shift linkage but the tranny was bullet proof. I had some reservations about it and walked away after that.

If so, I thought having the GT3RS transmission was bizarre in the first place and kind of a turn-off (glad to know the gut was right
). Good luck in your continued search!
Best wishes with your continued search and definitely continue to go with your gut instincts. Assuming it passes your 'gut check', then you can move on to a good independent PPI.
Yep, that's the one. Visually, the car looked ok. I just think that mechanically it was run hard, a lot. The owner of the dealership races porches. From the sound of it this car belongs to a friend of his and was on consignment. Probably a friend he raced with.
I found another car last night, on craigslist of all places (private party). The car is not far from me. The owner seems like a great person, very up front, willing to deal and will even drive the car to me. The price is right. It's a 2 owner car and the current owner has had it since 2007. They have all records (serviced at Porsche dealer) and the car looks to be in mint condition. The guy sent me about 200 pictures (not kidding). The miles are a little high for my liking at 61k, but from what I've been told this should be of little concern. He's going to drive it to me so I can have a PPI done locally, if I like the car.
Well, I am thinking that you may want to get serious and find a good specimen quickly because people have been picking up the low mileage 2003 and later cars at an " alarming ' rate. Perhaps they know something you don't like... economy is picking up, the new 991 TT is years away and really expensive so why wait, the difference is that the 996T and 997TT Mezger engined cars are a finite number now. It's a working and drivable collectors item in progress.

For sure there is no warranty. Compression check and DME readout were on my list. Although, from what I understand DME readout on the 996 can nearly useless, with only 2 types. Just checking for mechanical over revs, right?
Hey OP, I found this website (below). I hope this would help ya.

I highly doubt you're going to see normal-mileage 997 Turbos anywhere south of $60k anytime in the next several years.. I anticipate they'll hold their value better than the 996 Turbos based on looks alone.
