Thought you might like this chart:

More than 50% of the energy we consume is wasted and most of the transportation use is in autos. I'm more confident that efficiency gains can still be made with technology. But I completely agree we need our speed and fun too!
Also, before we blame too much on the regulations from decades ago that started in California, just think about how much better the air is in most metro areas these days. I remember back when you couldn't do any outdoor activities in L.A. on many days of the year (and you certainly couldn't see the mountains to the North).
OK -- I'm done defending California. There are plenty of things we do out here that are crazy.

Hey now, it's not like California is this big energy pig that can't fend for itself. Research some facts before you bash the state. We are ranked 7th for nuclear energy production and 1st for alternative resources such as Geothermal, Solar and Wind production. More telling is that we are ranked 4th for the least amount of energy consumption per capita in the nation. While I hate the CARB requirements, they have had a positive impact.

Emissions and speed
If you want to see what happens when there is no regulation on smog, look at the news from Beijing. Smog (not fog) so bad they had to close the airport.
Where there is a will, there is a way. Looking back from the original turbo to even the 996 turbo the difference in emissions is staggering and power potential and reliability are higher than ever. Hell, the 996 turbo counts as a LEV (low emission vehicle). People always say there is an end to technology but most of the time they are proven wrong in the end.
An electric in theory could be made very fast. They've come a long way from golf carts to the Tesla and beyond. Full torque instantly, and no power use when stopped in traffic. Hydrogen promises rocket fuel and water vapor as emissions. If we just say we can't do it, we won't.
RUF is developing a cool electric 911...

Thanks to all of you for your observations and comments to my rant. I hope the optimists are correct that we will find a way (maybe the flux capacitor is not just a movie myth). I brought it up more to provoke thoughts on how government interjects itself, sometimes for the betterment and sometimes not, but in the end the people will prevail.

A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicity.* Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address.

When does it end? Who's utopia gets the final approval for us all to live in?

I doubt that will be the case. Cars today outperform those from the past and burn cleaner. The same will hold for the future.
