Fire Extinguisher?

Do we need to keep a fire extinguisher in our cars if we do a track day. If so what size and does it need to be mounted.

not for any DE groups that I know of but racing clubs and some orgs. like POC do have requirements and some require a system not just a bottle...if you have just a bottle in your car it has to be mounted properly with a release that you can reach when strapped into your seat..otherwise it is just eye candy

That the one I have

came with the car, rattles like crazy. Need to look it over and see if I can't adjust it to quiet it down.

I have the same size in my car but was told that I won't extinguish much with it only very small fire. I hope I never have to use it.

This is so true. When I installed mine, first I put it on the passenger seat. I then tried a simulation of being strapped in (6-point) and needing to extinguish a fire in an emergency. I could not reach it and determined in a worse case scenario, I may not be able to access it quickly, if needed. I then remounted it on the drivers seat and can reach down and grab it very easily. And it does not interfere with driving or comfort at all - I don't even know it's there.

I'm interested in this question too. Personally, I think a lot of folks get it because it looks cool . If you're not using race fuel, I would think your chances of having to use the extinguisher is about the same at the track as it is on the street (maybe even a little less). Thoughts?

It's a good idea to have one, especially on a car you cherish, as a fire can start in the engine bay or anywhere else for a variety of reasons. If this should happen as you are driving down a road without any nearby water, hose, container for water, etc. - you are left to just watch your car burn. I don't carry one in my other vehicles, but I don't want my Porsche burning, so I carry one at all times...If you have ever had a car fire - I have had a SUV catch fire from a backfire - you would understand how easily it can happen and how defenseless you are without an extinguisher. Also, get the type that suffocates the flames, as opposed to shooting out chemicals - the chemicals can ruin your car.

Wouldn't you have to unstrap to get out of the burning car anyway and most fires would probably not be where you can extinguish it from the drivers seat? Seems odd to need to mount it when you are strapped...

I would be focusing on getting the heck out 1 and then putting the fire out as 2! :-)

of course...however, it needs to be accessible in the event you can't get out...on track, what is really needed is a full fire system...we are just kidding ourselves with these small bottle extinguishers...however, they can be usefull on the street in emergencies

Thanks. Excellent point. I'd also second the thought on chemical extinguishers even for the home. If you have to use the cheaper chem ones, you will pretty much ruin whatever you have to spray it at (e.g. oven). Pay the extra $$ and get a CO2 extinguisher. You'll probably never have to use it -- and if/when you do, you won't care that you paid more money for it.
