With a Porsche.. you WANT to know if something is amiss so you can nip the problem in the butt . But just so you know... I went from this really loud exhaust back to OEM and I like it.. a lot..

conventional wisdom says that throwing money ( parts ) at stuff isn't usually cost effective. i think you're on the right track though btw the belt or the ps res. you need to properly diagnose it first to ensure that's what it is, .. or not. when mine went, i went to the dealership and gave them the tsb number and asked them to replace it. they did but my warranty is long since expired.

if its *just* the pressure valve in the pr res, then i'm fairly certain you're not exacerbating the issue by not fixing it. it's just gonna whistle. a serp belt is another matter. change it if its bad!

the "clutch in" and the noise goes away, doesn't sound like the belt though. GL with it.

Do yourself a favor and make sure this noise is not coming from the serpentine belt tensioner before spending money on the power steering pump and reservoir. My tech misdiagnosed this and I had to pay for the pump and reservoir, and the sound was still there after the parts change. It was the tensioner right below the PS pump that was bad but because it was right next to the PS pump, separating the 2 noises was not possible. Tensioner only costs something like $129.

So Landjet, did the noise go away from the tensioner when you pushed in the clutch? The noise stops from the pressure control valve when you depress the clutch pedal, but I wouldn't think that was the case with just the tensioner.

I didn't read anything about the noise going away when he pushed in the clutch. If that's the case then it wouldn't be the tensioner. Rennwerks, please clarify if the noise goes away when you push in the clutch.

Sorry for the late response.
Didn't get a notification on this post.
The noise does go away when I push the clutch in.
Whistling sound is constant but quite faint. You can hear it but if the stereo is on (not blasting) you can't hear the whistle.
The interesting thing is that I just checked the records and the power steering unit was replaced less than a year ago. Could it be the cap? I thought I read somewhere that the cap can sometimes be the culprit?
Thanks!

the whistling shouldn't be "constant" since it happens when a valve in the ps reservoir reaches a certain ( high ) temp and vibrates/whistles. you may be thinking of the coolant cap which had been known to go bad, but doesn't whistle. it just leaks coolant if it's bad.

it's probably the ps res. you can replace it again? or install a fabspeed loud or turn up the radio... but it won't cause you a problem, other than the noise ( i'm told ). good luck w it.

I have heard a faint "whistle" under steady throttle that goes away under accel and/or more than 50% throttle. I have narrowed it down to drivetrain noise. It was only barely noticeable with windows up and stock exhaust. Belts, hoses, etc... check out ok.

Is drive e train noise normal also how do you check if belt is OK?

Belt tension can be checked by tugging on it - check underside (ribbed) for cracks.

This is what it sounds like when your power steering tank goes bad. I thought that I had a bad diverter valve. It turns out that I had a bad DV and power steering resevoir.

our PS steering valves whine. our dv's honk..i wonder if there's website for porsche's where they ***** about us!

re ps valve whine: i call that the only thing on these cars that often does not operate exactly as it should ( hence the "whine" ), BUT that if you do nothing about fixing it, nothing untoward or catastrophic will occur. i.e. it's not like a bad accumulator or serp belt etc etc. it's just gonna whistle under the right conditions. push in the clutch, or replace it..but i'm not sure i would spend the $1500.00 + to r&r it since it's just a "nuisance" ( imo ). porsche fixed a ton of them under warranty like mine... and as pointed out upthread,.. if you have the older oem cap on the coolant tank. replace that too. ( my .02 )
