996tt slight hesitation / hiccup...please help

Hey Guys,

Hope someone could help.

Just got my first Porsche a couple months ago...2001 996TT, 45k miles, engine is stock as far as I know.

There's no error codes and I've changed the plugs to the FR6's with new coil packs from Pelicans and sprayed out the MAF sensor. Had a shop check it out in Socal before purchasing and they said all was good so I went ahead and got it anyway.

The car felt like crap when I first got it. Felt much better after the two repairs but I don't think it's 100% right.

Weird throttle response occurs:
  • when getting off throttle...throttle fluctuates a tiny bit
  • when throttling from a steady throttle (around 2.5-3k)...doesn't quite respond right away
  • throttle doesn't respond immediately from idle...slight hiccup hesitation
Overall response just doesn't seem to be great. I know it could be better.

I was going to try cleaning out the throttle body. Anything else I could check without bringing to the shop?

Much appreciated!

Clean the TB and realize that you have two mechanical events that happen off idle. One being the low lift high lift camshaft/inlet tappet that will vary depending on your engine load request, temp and engine RPM. The second BUMP is the vario cam rotating and changing your camshaft timing> the module will rotate the camshaft to vary the advance depending on load request, temp and throttle position. The ECU want's to give you maximum torque, however it is restrained by engine operating temperatures. Think of it as a governor.

Turbo's do respond "slowly". Lots of intake tract, turbo's and intercoolers to suck/pump through too. Try cleaning the TB. That's always a good idea. It may help but still not feel right. Then try disconnecting the MAF. See if if runs better (on the factory base map when disconnected, you will get CEL's but they will clear or go away). If so you can just replace it and your CEL will go away. Should try to clear up if the MAF is bad and unplugged.

But I agree a newer MAF is always best.

Do you have a flash? Who did the plug change? Checked for boost leaks?

Where in SoCal are you? If this is the only 996tt you've driven, maybe you should compare it to another 996tt to see if yours feels normal.

Not sure if it was flashed. Any way of finding out? Local Porsche shop did the plug and coil Pack change. Haven't checked for vacuum leaks. I'm in NorCal...don't know if anyone else that has a 996tt. I've driven lots of other turbo cars...it's more like a hesitation than turbo lag. I'm in Monterey near laguna seca. Thanks again!!!

I'll probably just get a new maf sensor to eliminate that variable.

Hey Guys,

Got the MAF sensor installed today. Seems to be better but not sure if it's 100%.

I forgot to check the boost today but I believe max was 0.7 or 0.8 bar. If it's flashed, would boost be higher for 91 california pump fuel?

thanks!

996 turbos with k16 have very little turbo lag flash will still have .8 bar unless you have waste gates as well the waste gates gold the extra boost. Why not ask the porsche shop what they think?

Most flashed K16 programs are good for 1-1.1bar even on Cali91. Mine is EPL and has been rock solid.

When I first got my car I experienced the same hesitation. No codes. It really bummed me out. I got so miffed that when it happened once, I just floored it and finally got a code after two months of driving like this. The code told me what cylinder to focus on, but it turned out to be a coil. I bought BBI coils and never looked back. I've had the car for four years now and that problem has never returned.

I got coil packs, plugs, new MAF sensor, etc. it was a bit better but still hesitated. It wasn't noticeable when driven hard, more at normal driving speed. It got annoying so I sold it.
