Very strange. My CM Stage 3 held tight at 700 WHP and never had any slip ... Ever. I drag raced it and roll raced etc.

Did you get a new flywheel? Was the right pressure plate used ?

I'm with you jonty, the reason I mention the unusual wear patter on the UMW clutch is that whatever caused it may still be there and causing your current woes. Did you change throwout bearings?

I never had a problem with the UMW clutch or unusual wear pattern until I did my upgrade and I then went to an uprated (supposedly clutch). everything was changed.

I purchased the complete kit from EVOMS so I assume the correct pressure plate was used, flywheel was a new 964 rs item

Trying to figure it out , I did find out they sent me a sprung Sachs clutch and said it had the same holding power as the Sachs unsprung one with I found out this weekend is not true so I think they sent a similar clutch disk to what I had but with a stronger pressure plate. Which would explain the failure , It would basically paid for the same clutch that failed.

The temptation is to go to a CM 4 puck and be done with it. I have the GT2 clutch conversion so I am hoping I can modulate the clutch enough to not stall it every time I head out from 1st.

Did you install an oem 996tt throw out bearing? Because to use the 964RS flywheel you have to run the throw out bearing with the longer fingers or else the clutch will never fully clamp. The oem 996tt TO bearing has short fingers. The rs TO is a 944 part IIRC. Check in this because this may very well be your issue.

This is basically the setup I have and it takes some getting used to. The clutch engagement point is very high in the stroke and you only get about 1/4" of pedal play to engage it while holding 30-40 pounds of pressure. After 1500 miles now (mostly highway so not a lot of stop and go shifts) I'm fine with it, though it takes concentration on a steep hill to get it right. It would be easy if I revved it, but I rarely go over 1500 rpm when engaging it. On really steep hills I sometimes have to go to 2500 or so to get it right, but that's getting better over time too and I'm rarely going over 2000 right now in any sort of driving.

I would have said wheel spin untill i read that it was 5th gear. If you pulling it out take pictures and make sure you document it the removal and install again so that you do have back up and proof.

Things do happen, disc could be in backwards, pressure plate defective. Or the installer is one of the guys who puts the pressure plate and disc on the trans and then installs it and tightens the bolts to the flywheel through the start hole. If not done right could damage the pressure plate. I dont know just thinking out loud here. I have used CM stuff before never a problem.
