How to make a 3" x-pipe daily drive friendly
I love this forum! Thanks for all the helpful tips and information. I've decided to put my stock exhaust back on tomorrow and search for some mufflers I can put in after the "x" that won't hang too low. More adventures under the car await.
On the bright side...I was able to find some 315/25/19 tires after searching for weeks so that is one bright spot in my 996's week.

Enrique - any idea when you'll have some kind of bolt in solution? I had to take off the exhaust this weekend and I put my stock system back on. It is so much weaker! I hate to see such a nice x-pipe sitting on the floor of my shed collecting dust! Not to mention I'm feeling kind of less than smart for my purchase at the moment.
I probably should have heard one in person before I pulled the trigger.
P.S. I still have your under-car blanket do you want it back?

There are a few ways to handle this. There are plenty of mufflers out there, burns stianless are very nice but quite costly. Vibrant also has a nice muffler too. You can also close down the area at the tip to quiet the motor down too. As for fitting mufflers now, It will take some fab work as the pipe is fitted to the lower tab of the mount of the motor plate. So not only are you losing ground clearance you are trying to move the center of the pipe off the mounting tab. I don't think it will be so easy to added mufflers. I would try to restrict the outlet size before the tips first.
I recently had a 3" x-pipe installed (EBWerks) with cat-bypass pipes. As you can imagine it is quite loud. I love the sound but my neighbors aren't especially fond of it, especially when I start it in them morning before work
. I was wondering...are there any standard length cats that my actually quiet the car enough to prevent it from setting off alarms? I love the sound but it honestly is a bit much.
I don't want to go back to the stock exhaust but I need to do something. Any ideas?

. But here are my thoughts. 3'' is not need until 800wheel hp. 3'' is far to loud for a motor that is not filling all that volume with hot exhaust gas. I made this exhaust
PS the alarm that beeps goes off from my F550 powerstoke too
i really tried to stay away from this thread.. I did, dont look like it with back to back post though

I made this exhaust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoiqj...=ulnhdtdnd_gfs for a member here and yes on cold start it is loud but it quiets right down. You can talk with out yelling in the car. I used 2.5'' pipe because at his power level that all he needs. Also the way the two banks meet has a lot to do with it.

Thanks Tim and BH Turbo for the info and I am now seeing the light as to the mistake I made going with a 3" system. I just wanted something that would spool faster, give me about 40-50 more HP with my K16s and 1bar flash and sound a little better. Sometimes lessons are expensive but I'm going to try to sell the ebwerks system instead of adding mufflers to it, and then buy a catless 2.5" system instead.
When it comes time for the California smog test every 2 years I'll just spend 3 hours under the car swapping the stock exhaust back in.
If anyone is interested in a sweet 3" exhaust that is quite well made, it will be on e-bay this week.
I think I'm too new on the forum to post for sale ads or pricing and I don't want to break any rules but if anyone is interested please PM me.
Thanks,
Michael

I thought they were too but I haven't heard anything from them about it in a while. Enrique posted something about testing a racing motorcycle muffler that would slip in before the outlet after the X but I can't imagine that would quiet the system much. For someone who isn't too modded out this system is just plain overkill though.
i have 4 Vibrant 3" mufflers that we just took out of my exhaust and that i am no longer using. they will make your car ALOT quieter. i used them for a few months and decided i wanted my car louder
