...this is the crux of the Ferrari-Porsche dichotomy. Historically you've either belonged to one team or the other, but Ferrari relies almost exclusively on an emotional, virtually ethereal level of connection. It fashions a near-religious following by being unattainable, hyperbolic, almost deliberately fragile, because to use one everyday would be crass.

Like dolloping too much caviar on your Alpen each morning, just because you could.

With Porsche it's different. Partly because so much of what the brand has become, so much of its appeal is bound up in gnarly grass-roots motorsport outside of Formula One. But mainly because of what Porsche road cars have become over the past 40 years.

Ask a spread of Porsche fans what it is that defines the respect they have for their car - and this applies to any model - and you'll garner any number of different responses, but one underlying feeling will percolate through. They will be amazed at the car's usability: how it fits into their lives so seemlessly. And despite this amazing domesticity: how it still remains a deeply coveted, emotionally charged object. Like a fit, lithe female accountant. With a healthy top shelf. Capable of brewing exceptional beer.
