One step closer...
No test drives, but finally at least saw and sat in a 997S and a 996 c4 cab (Memphis dealership is 120 miles away and no Porsches around here). I was happy to see that the 996 interior compared very well to the 997, and I like the exterior of the 996 a little better. That (in addition to all of the posts here) helped to confirm my desire for a 2-3 year old 996tt instead of a new 997S. Wife and kids liked 'em both, and that's important, too.
The lease on my current SC430 doesn't run out until February, so it's still a little too soon--I've even stopped shopping for specific 996tt's because I'm worried that the perfect one will show up and I won't be able to go for it. But dang, I've caught the Porsche fever so maybe I should just pay a penalty and get out of the lease early--I don't know if I can wait until February!

There is no comparision, IMHO. I would always take horsepower over new - a used turbo vs a new normally aspirated car. I don't know what the 997 turbo is going to bring, but if it's not a huge jump in handling or performance, I'm keeping what I have.
