K24 turbos
#61
What is flaky about them?
#62
Hey Dez,
That is acutally words right out of Todd Knighton's mouth back when I was looking to replace my K16's. They just do not do anything particularily well and their spooling was referred to as "Flaky" by Todd.
So many fantastic turbos out there now that it seems like K24's is an odd choice.
cheers,
Marty

I dont agree with a lot of tuner hp consipracy junk being thrown around in this thread, even though there are bogus tuner dynos floating around mainly from dyno dynamics and mustang dynoes since they are teh easiest to rig. plain jane K24s with exhaust and proper 1-1.1 bar tune have no problem making 500whp. Nicely running K24 cars have trapped 125-127mph which perfectly corresponds to the 500whp mark. i trapped 125.5mph on my K24s with just tune, exhaust, and 5bar fpr.
On dynojet that we use:
- Stock K16 996tt makes 360whp rwd
- Tune, Exhaust, intercoolers K16 car makes 430whp
- tune, exhuast, k24 996tt make 500-515whp
- Stock C6 Z06 makes 420whp for comparison

My hangup has been losing spool going to a hybrid K24 or having too much torque (driveability and rods) from some of the billet 16's out there. Ultimately I think the A28 would be ideal. I just don't trust any tuners in my area.

I haven't had the chance to really drive anything extensively other than maybe Al Norton's old GT28's (I think that's what they were) and those had a good bit of lag to them. Rode in some 18g cars and they certainly don't spool faster. You can get decent 60-130, trap speed or mile power with some 18g, 20g type turbos, but those are not good for the track. Many of the fast road racing Turbo's or GT2's have been K24's (Topspeed, One Lap Davia, One Lap Stewart) have been K24's. That is no coincidence.

I agree with this for the most part, but the TUNE plays a small part with spool. When I first started building my car, I rode in, drove, and roll raced a GT28 car. My car was faster in every way, including spool. To add to that, when I added Meth, I lost a little spool. All about heat in the turbine housing...

I have a 16g car. Exhaust, headers, Y pipe, injectors, Markski intercooler
and tune. Actually spent a week with Markski in Chicago and he had to
fix the previous work performed on the car lol! He bench tuned and
massaged the car into a street monster. Mark and his mechanic said
the car felt more like a 3071 then a K16. He also said no one would
believe it's a 16 car when I post numbers. Btw, he converted the car
to rwd. I had the car dynoed on the dream killer and it posted 493 hp
and 523 ft. lb tq 1.2 bar. At 1.4 bar it put down 535 hp and 593 tq. No V box
yet but it's definitely low 6's 60-130 and 0-100 is low 6's. Real world
proof is I smoked a Z06 with heads, throttle body tune and exhaust.
We're not talking car lengths, I mean I left him setting still. God bless
the Polish Porsche genius in Chicago.

[QUOTE=MARKSKI@911tuning;3675152]Those numbers are on a mustang dyno. He did previously a dunojet and that was 570whp. Told him to go back now after the car is finally fixed.[/QUOTE)
That's great numbers for those turbo's, good job.

Thanks John. The car is significantly faster now at 1.2 bar than it was at
1.4 pre Markski and as Mark said, the car put down 570 on a dynojet.
570 with boost/ vacuum leaks, fouled plugs, flattened headers and a
half dozen other problems lol. I'm bettin it hits 620 on the same dyno
now. I think those mustang's dyno a tad low.

Yep, 100 octane for 1.4 and 93 pump for 1.2. Btw, I read some of your
post making reference to Barber. Are you local? If so, you must know
David from Speedsouth. I think he has the record at Barber. I had the
car dynoed on his mustang at Speedsouth. He butt-dynoed the car at
630 to the wheels!!! He was shocked to see 535 but he maintained
that the 600 tq rw and the power across the band accounted for the
otherworldly acceleration! This guy builds 1000 hp street machines
and zr1 race cars on a daily basis and he said this is the fastest street
legal car he'd driven in. I assured him there are some fellows out there
with 996's that would leave me in the dust. He had a hard time believing
that.

dynojet. Once I bag the 60-130 record for a k16 based car I'll be looking
for a 997 GT2 and you'll be getting a call. I read where some guys are
worried about the GT2's lack of safety and all the hoopla about the moniker
"widow maker." Obviously they've never driven a 2700 lb/ 500 hp 930 lol.
