Tipronic
Hello folks
Does anybody know what the maximum horsepower is that a tiptronic gearbox can handle. I have a 2001 996 Turbo and would love to hear from you. Kind regards Luke |
There are better experst to ask but I think it is around low 600 crank. The box will handle more but not for long. Biggest concern is clutchpacks cant hold much more than 600 ft lbs of torque. These boosted cars make a ton of torque and the clutchpack from 3-4 gear is the one that often slips. Once slipping, fluid is cooked and the trouble begins. You can build trans for 3500-6000 and it will hold a lot more but that is not cheap and you need someone who knows what they are doing. My car is about 575-600 crank and it isdoing fine with a tip. I only have 24k mi and I did service the trans for fresh fluid just to be on the safe side. I would not go over 650 crank and even then I doubt it would hold forever. If you have not driven the car with 550 to 600 hp you will be nicely surprised how much an extra 150 plus hp feels in these cars. It is not slow. If you are trying to run with the big dogs on highway pulls etc or 1/4 mi below 11.75 or so then plan on going big and a trans build should be factored in. Then you can do 700 plus at the wheels which is 800 crank and that will run with a lot of things!!!!

The people at Evolution Motorsports advised me that the Tip S can handle way more than 600 lbs of torque. The Porsche Tip S is (according to them) the same transmission as in the SL 65 except it's set up for 4 wheel drive rather than 2. The number they threw at me (I think it's high) is closer to 1000 lbs!.

My car was dyno'd at 510 to the wheel and I think I am at the borderline. I have been running this power level for 4 years and so far okay.

Dear Silver, thank you very much for your reply. I found it very informative. I do have different exhaust headers and silencer (Maxspeed-motorsport) and GT2 Turbo's. Just wonder if I could do something more and if the gearbox box would allow me to. Don't know if my Headers and exhaust is optimal either. Reading what you wrote I take it I am just about on maximum as I guess I have around 500 whb but might be completely wrong. Silver you pack quite a number of mods on your 996TT.
Snowcar and My996TT thank you so much for replying as well. It is much appreciated. What kind of 1/4 mile times and 0-100 km's/h (0-62.17) mph do you achieve? I have some other questions as well if you fellows would not mind writing me at: lhvanroo@gmail.com I am out here in Africa with much less info available then you guys. Kind regards Luke |
Once you get it built ul never miss a gear and ul smoke any 6speed with indenticle mods.
|
Hello Pumptech. Sorry but it seems I am a bit slow.
What does "Once you get it built" mean? Luke |
Once u get your tiptronic rebuilt. Thumb through this thread.

pumptech what are your mods? Lets meet up & test your theory.
|
Knew I'd start taking heat for that. Now if you were paying attention, you would recall I said equal mods. But let's further define that. Do you really think that 2 indenticle 5,6,700 RWHP cars with equal weight one 6speed one built tiptronic that the 6speed will win? The tiptronic will hold optimal boost between shifts and will not miss 2nd gear, or any other.

My996TT those are really impressive figures. What altitude level are you at? Would not mind getting that from my car reliably. What were your mods to get 510 HP on the back wheels?
Pumptech, all the factory figures are contrary to what you are saying. What makes you think otherwise? Luke |

The weights on factory turbos are different for one. secondly there are NO factory test with upgraded tiptronic transmissions. 3rd drivetrain loss is different on the two.
Again.....given equal weight and equal rear wheel power. Drivetrain loss is higher on a tiptronic so more power at the flywheel is required to achieve equal rear wheel power. |
My996TT, I don't understand half of your upgrades...shy smile.. Dunno all the acronyms..
Is it possible at all to have your email adr? Mine is: lhvanroo@gmail.com Pumptech, what do you mean the weights on factory turbos are not the same? I know there is no factory test with upgraded tip. However, a tests shows tip is slower than manual. How much different is drivetrain losses? As far as I know the tip is actually lighter than the manual which was a surprise to me. Ah ok... so your last sentence gives it away. You need more Hp. So, that's the thing... the back wheel hp is the same but the engine is stronger. That is really not comparing apples with apples. Thanks for sharing your view. Kind regards Luke |
