Can anyone tell me if they can spot a modified Eprom on my ECU?
Thanks to the folks who responded to my question. Im going to take mine out again and see if it separates easily. When I took mine apart, previously, I was unaware that the chip was on the bottom and dont remember even trying to remove it. Hopefully Steve and I will have a new holiday flash soon. Thanks again.
To 03 996tt,
Although I didn't need to do this, I assume it will separate more easily if warm. Since you're in Florida I suspect it's already a fair amount warmer than my garage though! I just used my hands and progressively pulled it apart slowly, but it didn't take much effort.
I looked at the glue residue carefully to see if there was any evidence of a second glue attempt, and the pattern matched perfectly and was very light. Best wishes to get the ECU separated fully from the case, but if it's like my case I suspect you'll have no trouble at all.
Like you said, hopefully we'll both have new tunes to ring in 2013!

Good advice Mark, I'm sure you know better than nearly anyone about the need for care here. I know I would have been a lot more uncomfortable if mine didn't come apart.
So, the mystery continues a bit!

Just a bit of an update here. I spoke with a local tuner who is very familiar with the Gemballa tune and he's still concerned I may have a problem due to the rationale expressed by Markski about the seal not being very strong. Here are some of his thoughts, but he has been kind enough to offer to test out the ECU and see if it's not write locked for me:
I'll keep you guys posted as I find this pretty fascinating, and feel the information could be handy for others who purchase pre-flashed cars that were done years ago.
The problem with Gemballa >> they put a WRITE block to the file. We can READ the ECU, but you cannot back to it. Ruf does this also..
The last option is to Bench flash the ECU with the boot pin. If it boots up we are good, if it doesn't the chipset needs to be removed/solder job. I really don't like doing solder jobs (that means that the chipset has been heated two times).
If the first option doesn't work, we can proceed to the boot pin method (ECU out of car).. If I am not successful you won't lose anything $$$ or the Gemballa file, and we are just out some time and effort.
