There is an extra 4 prong switched power that goes to nothing behind the bat wing. That's how I power mine.

Hey Bro,
I'll take some pictures the afternoon and also try and see which blank slot number is unswitched. Don't pull the entire center console out it's a PIA.

No offense, but that looks horrible to me. It's esthetically unappealing, obscures the windshield slightly, very obvious to cops and to fellow speeders who want to draft your detector and is prone to being ripped off in less than great areas.

If the OP can find the switched wire at the bottom of the front console, it's really not a bad deal splicing into a wire. Use a pre-made splicer that comes with the radar kits, or go to radio shack. Worst case, if you F it up, it's a very minor fix -- it would take 5 mins. I'd be way more comfortable with that than plugging into a fuse, for whatever reason.

Every time I turn on my car, my radar detector is there, waiting to alert me. Of course, I never exceed the speed limit so it's just there for academic purposes .

No offense taken at all; the cord doesn't bother me in the least. What's important is what I think about it.

As for obscuring the windshield, with my sitting position and V1 mounting location, it doesn't obscure my vision at all. Absolutely zero. However, if I mount the detector any higher it does obscure some of my forward vision. If I mounted the detector anywhere near the rear view mirror, it would be a major additional visual blockage for me.

As for cops; I couldn't care less if they see the detector.

As for people drafting me; I couldn't care less. Besides, if I did ever care it wouldn't take long to drop a very high percentage of them.

As for getting ripped off in "less than great" areas; I try very hard to avoid less than great areas, but even given that tactic, I always remove the cord and the detector and hide them when I leave the car parked. I'd offer that removing a hard wired detector normally leaves the wire exposed for anyone with less than stellar motives to see. Maybe they think..."there's a wire, but no detector/Garmin/etc, so they probably have the device hidden somewhere. I think I'll check". On the other hand, I leave no sign of peripheral electronics. They may still break into my Turbo, but it won't be because I left any sign of electronics.

Radar detection is not operationally affected when using a low mounting position.
If you get hit with laser, 99% of the time, it's game over. RARELY, you will get lucky and get an indication after a reflection off of another car but, again, that's rare. Keep the unit up high so it can catch radar as far ahead as possible. Every time that my laser indicator has gone off, it's either from a set of LED brake lights, or a suggestion to save gas and pull over immediately as the patrolmen has just put his car in Drive and is coming to say hello. I can't help much on the hardwire. I tapped mine into the phone cable that the OP can't find.

As promised I checked mine. It row A (top row) fuse 6 from the left (heated seats). I don't have heated seats so I'm only using the jumper fuse side. Picture attached.

Hope this helps

Thank You so much. I am giving this fuse a shot again tomorrow. I tried that fuse but think me not putting a fuse in the tap kept it from coming on. I really appreciate all the input from everyone.

I just cannot have the cord hang from the radar on the dash. It just gives it a unfinished look.

Being a first time new (used) Porsche owner this board has proven the opposite of the sterotype given to owners. After dealing with the M3 board for the past 11 years it really is refreshing too get straight answers and help.

I have on several occasions received laser energy that was directed at a car ahead of me. We don't have much in the way of defense against laser, so why give up any of what we have by mounting the detector high on the windshield??

As for radar, there is no operational advantage to mounting the detector high on the windshield as compared to the lowest windshield mount. I've posted about this here before. A search may find it for you. If not, I'd be happy to go over the physics again (and yes, I know what Mike wrote in the V1 operator's manual).

So the lowest windshield mounting position doesn't lose any operational advantage against radar, but it maximizes the chances you have against laser. Unless the low mounting position presents a forward vision obstruction issue for the driver, it's the no-brainer place to mount a laser/radar detector.
