Deaths by dogs
2005 -- Pit bulls (39%) Rottweiler (21%) = 60%
2006 -- Pit bulls (40%) Rottweiler (31%) = 71%
2007 -- Pit bulls (41%) Rottweiler (12%) = 53%
2008 -- Pit bulls (43%) Rottweiler (13%) = 56%
2009 -- Pit bulls (32%) Rottweiler (13%) = 45%
2010 -- Pit bulls (57%) Rottweiler (12%) = 69%
2011 -- Pit bulls (60%) Rottweiler (17%) = 76%

The numbers just do not lie. They are akin to stats for vehicle safety, if there are way more injuries in one particular type or model of car we do not generalize and say that all cars are dangerous so buyer beware.

Here you go, even more stats that paint a picture. http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreation...ogbreeds-a.pdf

I myself have always owned husky type dogs, I know what I own. I live in the country so my dogs contact with people is usually what I make it, the last one I had was left to me by my father when he died, I watched him like a hawk and controled him closely.

In the early 2000's when the Rotty and bully breeds really started to become a favored dog the rates of Bad and even lethal attacks started to go through the roof.

Now I say that the small yappy mutts probably bite more often; BUT!!!! I look at it this way, do I want to get stabbed by toothpick or do I want to get stabbed by a 10" kitchen knife.

Just several months ago one of my best friends dog killed his three year old. I told him that I though a pit-bull was a stupid dog to have with young kids in the house; he showed me all the token pictures of his sweet innocent bully with his feet and belly up in the air. Even ones with his baby sleeping on, or next to the dog. Yup, how sweet!!!!

His older boy was playing Frisbee with the dog; the Frisbee landed next to his younger brother so he picked it up. The Pit-bull Grabbed the 3yr old by his neck, crushed his throat and lower jaw, shook him violently several times then dropped him and picked up the Frisbee like nothing happened.

Please look at those stats then try and tell me these fighting breeds are just so kind and gentle. Every year after 2003 well over 50% of the human fatalities due to dog attacks the deaths were attributed to Pit bulls and Rottweiler’s; and over 50% of the attacks the dogs killed familiar people, especially kids and elderly.

About 5 years ago I was looking for a dog
I spent several months going around the rehoming places

One day whilst at the local centre I saw a pitbull named Roxy
All the other dogs were getting loads of attention from people, but Roxy was being ignored

She sat in her shelter, looking all sorry for herself

I asked the lady at the desk what the story was with Roxy
She told me Roxy had been mistreated and neglected, and that she was very untrusting towards people because of this

I went back outside and watched her for a while
Roxy sat at the back of her cage ignoring everyone, and being ignored in return

I walked over to her and she walked to the front of her cage and leant against me

After being in her company for a while the lady asked if I wanted to take her for a walk around the fields

The lady said Roxy had lots of energy as she was very rarely walked because everyone was scared of her

I agreed, and after putting her harness on we went out onto the fields

Roxy wasn't a big pitbull, she was average size at best - But her conditioning was amazing

She was powerful, had very low levels of body fat, and you could easily see every striation in her shoulders and legs

At this time I was probably weighing around 220lbs (I'm 6ft tall)
I could.....
Squat 440lbs
Bench 395lbs
Dead lift 580lbs

Despite my size, and being around dogs and handling them for a large part of my life, I had absolutely no control over Roxy what so ever

That little dog dragged me all around those fields for hours

She had a wonderful temprement that day, and I would have loved to have taken her home

BUT, knowing that I couldn't control her made me decide it would have been a very bad idea.... and so I went home alone

Due to her history/background I couldn't be certain she wouldn't strike out one day, and I knew that if that did ever happen I would have been completely powerless....she had strength beyond measure

Roxy was lovely, I'm so sorry I couldn't take her and look after her, I really would have loved to have been the person to do that

But, with their power, these dogs have the potential to be extremely dangerous, and this should always be at the forefront of peoples minds

What a horrible nightmare. That is one of the worse scenarios imaginable for a parent. When I travel for work, I send my dog away to stay with a friend of mine. I equate her a little to Edward Scissorhands. He meant well, but those big scissors where dangerous. there is also some confusion with her as to who the Alpha is when I leave, so I remove her from the equation.

Yep...the poops are impressive in their mass and odor.

that's what everyone is telling us. He's our first dog and he fits in well. early socialization to people (adults and kids) and other animals. Dog park several times a week etc...

but the breeder later said he wouldn't be surprised if he outgrew his parents. Panzer is 60lbs and exactly 5 months.
Mom was 125lbs and dad was 130. So i'm sure he will be a big German Tank

That is a really tragic story...

We have a male brindle colored Akita named Aragorn who weighs about 110lbs. He is as gentle as they come but he lives with my parents now that my wife and I have a newborn son of 4 months. Your story just confirms that we made the right decision. - Because you just never know.
