Yes intercoolers are a better choice, noticeable.
I had originally a 200 cell Cargraphic, restrictive, then went to 100 Milltek.. NITE AND DAY..

Exhaust can hurt as much as it can help. Make sure you don't have a damaged or clogged cat, etc...

I even switched the Cargraphic 200 cats to Speed Tech 100 cell cats but the inner muffler piping was to small for the 18g level.

I have inlets but with mafless tunes now running fine you might be better scrapping the long inlets, get short intakes off the turbo and kill the MAF at the same time. BBi has a number of cars tuned by Todd @ protomotive that are running fine.
