996tt 2004 or 997.1 tt 2007-2008
Sounds like you answered your own question. 996TT it is.
ok guys but keep in mind I already have a 997.2 cab pdk with tune exhaust aesthetic mods etc...
althought the .1 has the different engine wouldn't you rather try and tune something else...
also in canada for lay low reasons owning a second or third generation sport car is always a good idea... keeps the attention off...
while putting all that into consideration if you all still think I should go 997.1 I guess I will really have to go that route...
the interior... I really want a track car... therefore I would be changing the steering wheel , recaro seats ... kenwood or pioneer unit with receiver & sub.
considering you are all more abour performance than show... I highly doubt if both where in front of you a stock 997.1 or a track modded 996 and freshed up interior I cant believe you would still pick the 997.1... also they 991 turbo out... 997.1 will go down more... the 996 will drop another 10-20k max in the next couple of years... by 2015-16 ill go pick up a 991 gt3...

the first part of that sentence is true, but i wouldn't count on the second part coming to pass. the impending 991 turbo will have more negative impact on 997t's pricing than it will on 996t's. they aren't going to go that much lower.
+1! You can get 996TT's in the high 30s now. Highly doubt they will ever sell in the 20k range.
I have driven both hard.
I would get the 997 T if I wanted to keep it near stock and be a GT car. Meaning take it on a nice cruise up hwy 1, to downtown... date night etc.
If I want something more "raw" and modify get a 996T.
/end .
997 Turbo is a luxury car first, sports car second.
996 Turbo is a sports car. No luxury car in this phase of Porsche history w the 911.
Plain and simple. No other way to slice it with less words.

At least!
I dunno, man... Between this one and the other "this versus that" thread going on right now, I'm hearing a lot of love for the 996.

Guys I got a new dilemma ... I am between a 2003 996 TT 86,000km 19inch asanti(garbage) evoms ecu tune, evo intake, ypipe & apr throttle body , maxpeed exhaust , 50,000$
or 2003 996 tt 65,000km with 19s stock 997.1 wheels... bone stock driven by an older gentleman... pampered at the stealership... x50 tips but I think it was an option correct? I checked and Id dint seem to have the bigger turbo's or intercooler... expensive canadian price are 55,000$

random observations of a bunch of strangers... I do not consider the other forums members here that way...
I assume most of them are like me, porsche enthusiasts. We research our cars, analyze them, feel how they respond to different environments & mods.
this is a car forum which specializes in porsche... in particular 911 turbo from all generations. My thread is posted in the 996TT and 997TT sub-forum... how the **** is that random/strangers?
I will base my decision after proper analysis and I consider these forums a big part of my decision making process.
Once I did a poll for my amg exhaust and I listened to the shop instead of the forum poll answers and guess what I was unhappy with the exhaust... changed it for the forum recommended and was then very happy but having wasted $.
I appreciate everyone's input and find most people here quite knowledgeable.
some more than others
i think a 996t will suit your requirements perfectly. the differences in PERFORMANCE btw the 997t and the 996t are not significant enough to warrant or justify the add'l 30-40k spend.
now i would rather myself have the 997t for OBVIOUS reasons. ( EG porsche turbo's do NOT get worse with each successive iteration PERIOD LOL )..
but for a dedicated tracker or a sunday tool? 996 will kick *** cheaply and reliably. if not as comfortably as the 997 platform. but then who buys a turbo for comfort? ( dont answer that! )
and lastly..re you initial query and its validity? perfectly reasonable.. and .. at least this isn't ANOTHER oil/coolant/tire comparison thread, so you're good
we all have bad days.. and we all ( well, should ) talk **** once in awhile too

it's upthread. nary a thread i don't tak **** in lol.
997 tt ANY day.. unless money is a factor. period. all the talk of 997t is a "luxury car" first, "sports car" second is absolute fantasy. no disrespect meant to f1 but cmon. they are porsche turbos with mezger engines! take out the stock motor mounts. put in a ssk! lower it. whatever.
yes, the stock 997 t is more "genteel" when you're SITTING IN IT. but get on it. same car. essentially. but more dough, no doubt.
add: i can't speak to the specifics of one CAR over another. only the two iterations.
PS! if you buy a stock 996t.. you'll need to spend a bunch on bolt ons to make it as fast as it should be. same with 997t. therein lies your answer
