High Performance driving schools
High Performance driving schools
My buddy and I want to attend one or some of these. Which one is the best for the kind of cars we drive (996 TT, and Gallardo). Will any of them offer the skills, or are some geared more toward "exotic" type cars? We are looking for ones in the United States. Thanks!
Porsche has a 1-2 day DE that's geared towards street performance instead of track. You drive 911 and Boxter. Porsche's website has a lot of detail including cost and iteriary. It's about $1200/day so it's pretty expensive. You get your own car though and lot of time is spend driving instead of seminars.
Check the websites for the tracks in your area (assuming you want something close so that you can use your own cars). The track calendars are usually available so that you can see who has rented the track. Most private clubs that rent the track offer instruction of varying quality. Club contact info is usually on the website. Contact the club/visit their website to get a feel as to how they run their events and how much instruction is available.
Check with your local PCA to see what if anything they offer. If you have not done any performance driving autocrossing is a fun/cheap way to thrash your car to start with.

the Mercedes AMG Challenge is a great program. Pro drivers right seat for you and teach you some great performance driving techniques in some pretty fun cars. Its pretty cheap too....

You probably want to look more at performance streey driving courses vs. race car driver training. They are very different skill sets. Skip Barber is definately the later.

If you are a novice, go to the 3-4 day "Grand Prix" at Bob Bondurant in Chandler AZ. You will beat on their cars and learn some very important track and street handling techniques. Then take your own cars to a local HPDE and have some fun. Barber is also good but more for open wheel if that's what you want.

Howdy!
This is a great site that compiles all the DE type events in one place with links to the group hosting site, contacts, etc. As you'll see if you check out the schedule, there's typically something everyday on some track, somewhere! Just figure out what tracks are in your area (or how far you're willing to drive/trailor).
Anyway, here's a link directly to their 2005 schedule listing:

Same issue I faced last year before I bought my tt cab. I had driven my Boxster and Boxster S at various race tracks, as well as my original Mini Cooper S, but never had driven a 911, at speed.
I signed up for Porsche's Driving Experience and had a blast. You get your own 996 (now, 997) for two days and really learn its handling as well as shifting, braking and obviously, driving a new track (Barber MotorSports in Birmingham, AL).
The only issue is that the driving is not as advanced as some of the participant's ability, but, on balance, it is a first class driving school with world class drivers and instructors. If you are not an experienced Porsche driver, this is the school to attend.
