The 986 cluster switched from bulbs to LEDs around 2001. Supposedly the 2003 996 and 986 are very similar except the outer two gauges (voltage and oil pressure).
Do you also have white warning indicators for over temp and low fuel? I'll need to take note of those.
Are the filters on the speed and clock just like the AC control amber filter? They'll need to be replaced with a white filter too?
Thanks for the info. I'm building up as much info as I can before I tear into mine since I have very little experience with auto electronics.
The little side LCD screens do need to be replaced with a white filter or you'll get the same color as me... Green... Yellow + White LED = Green? I suppose they have a blue-ish tint... haha
Just mark which LEDS would correspond to what. The only 3 LEDs that I soldered to white and shouldn't have are the blinkers and high beams.
I've spent a lot of time learning and researching how to execute this project. I'm finally ready to give you all a write-up on this!
I recently changed the gauge faces of my 2003 996 GT2 from the dull orange to a brand new BIGHT WHITE! The results are amazing... I have to share with everyone else.
This guide will cover the disassemble and changing of the LEDs within the HVAC and Gauge Cluster systems on Porsche 996's 2001-2005.
...
I'll get some better photos of the final result eventually. The LCDs are green because I didn't remove the filter from those. To get the LEDs color on the LCDs I would have had to replace those filters too. This isn't hard, but when I first tested them I liked the green...
Pfewwww! Fantastic post and amazing job!!!
Actually I'm not looking for changing the color of my dash, but the needle of my oil pressure gauge is not enlighten anymore (but it's still functional). Looking at the picture just above your video, I understood that there is one LED for the needle, and one for the gauge, which would mean that the led for my needle would be dead, right?

Id have to double check for sure. But I think you're right. There is a single LED for each needle.
My memory is foggy, but you may have to unsolder the actual motor controling the needle. It could be under there. The motor is attached with four solder points, as well as pegs through the board.
Good luck!

This is awesome. I have a 2003 996 cabriolet ( built in Dec. 2, 2002), and I feel my LEDs are getting weak, as in dim, and getting hard to see in daylight, and especially with the top down. I’m 80, and in Bedford, Texas( between Dallas and ft. Worth, and am wondering if you would know anyone anywhere that could, would tackle this job for me. I’ve been asking around and haven’t gotten anywhere except Ikarz, in bakers isle, Ca., that want $5-800., to do this job. A bit mor than I can handle on soc. Sec. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave

This tutorial is awesome! I’m 81 and have a 2003 996-2 cabriolet. 1), are the original led bulbs orange or is there an orange filter that can be removed? I just can’t see the gauges in daylight and especially with the top down.2), at my age I’m not steady enough to do the fine soldering required, so, as one previous reader asked, would you consider my asking if you would do my cluster for me?, please? Some things I can do, but I’m afraid this is above what I can do. I would like the same bright whit as your’s came out too. If you’re too busy, would you know of another source that could do this really nice job for my. I’m not in a hurry, and would like to get it done soon so I can enjoy my 996 more for what time God has left for me here. I’m in Bedford, Texas. Thanks. Dave I’m not sure how to send you a PM.
