What did you cross-shop when you bought your 996tt?
Owned a 97 Mustard Yellow TT V8 car. Don't buy one unless you're 5'8" and shorter and your feet are size 9 or smaller...
speed yellow viper in the same dealer. interior was pure plastic junk.
z06 in red nice car but i had to search the sea of vettes in the dealer to find it. wanted to be something special.
always wanted a 911 and the tt was such a great buy after a 5 min drive i knew this was the car to own

My list was huge......996 TT. LOL!
Ever since my first 996 Carrera 2 about 5 years ago which I had to sell I've been hooked on Porsches. Then I had a very brief stint few years back with a 01 996TT that I had to sell. So when my career got back on track first thing I bought was my new baby!
I did sway a bit because of the lack of 996 TT cars up here at the time and almost bought a 997 Carrera. Glad I didn't!

I was replacing my Supra Turbo and wanted something a little more mature.
Cars considered
- M6 (Not "sporty" enough, but ended up buying my wife an M5)
- E90 M3 (Not seriously considered since I have an E46 M3 and the E90 still has no torque)
- C6 Z06 (I actually love the exterior look of the C6 Z06, but the interior materials are cheap, there's no back seat and there is still the stigma of a Vette)
- 997 Turbo (the cost premium was too much versus the 996 turbo)
- 997 Carrera (The modern interior and improved styling couldn't offset the lack of power) I actually drove a 997 GT3 RS and would still pick my car over the GT3 RS due to lack of power/torque.
- F360 (Not enough bottom end torque, no back seat and you lose your a$$ on retained value and maintenance if you actually drive the car)
Later, Steve

So far here is where I'm at:
C6Z - I had a C5Z and the C6Z didn't address some of the things I didn't like
NSX - Too slow for the money, interior resembles my TL
Viper - Realistically can't be my daily with rain/long business trips
997.1S - Looks great, handles great, but I'll always want a turbo or GT3
997TT - For the price its a little much, but on the right day w/ the right deal I might surprise myself
M3 - Been there, done that. If I go back it'd be an E90 and it would get supercharger, but do I really want to go back to the same?
E63 - Torque monster, but still a heavy sedan and I'm not a fan of Mercedes service experience
C63 - I haven't driven one yet, but some days I like it and some I don't
GTR - Would love one, but it'd have to be a 2012+ which is out of my range at the moment
C7 Z51 - Looks mean, but 'Vettes depreciate. May as well wait until the hype dies down and the bugs get fixed. Maybe pick one up moderately used in the future
You'll laugh but for a split second today I thought about a B5 S4 or a MK4 R32 to hold me over until spring. Come spring I'd either keep it and get the 996tt or sell and get the 996tt or 997tt. Not sure where that thought is going right now.

I am not a person that is 100% sold on the Porsche look, there are numerous other cars out there that I like to look at a whole lot more; but in the end Porsche builds a nice looking car that has top echelon super car performance at a very reasonable cost. So that being said I have a highly modified track orientated 911 turbo. Great reliable can drive it every day car that is relatively cheap to maintain.
If I had to do it over knowing what I would eventually put ($$$) into a turbo to make it faster just because I could I would have gone with a newer 997 GT3RS done a few suspension mods and added an exhaust to make it sing. No point spending big bucks on a motor that you can not make any sizable gains with so money saved.
ALTHOUGH!!!! After my first and only run in with law enforcement I am seriously rethinking this whole supercar thing. Moped FTW.

I was looking at a new GTR coming from my 996 2002 C2 that I put an EVO supercharger on But I stuck with Porsche because I bought my current Turbo with 10,000 miles that the original owner took the price hit on.
Short list for me as well. As a life-long Porsche *****, I just wasn't interested in anything else. I owned a nice low-miles Boxster S and wanted to add a high-hp Porsche. Wound up selling the Box, as nice a car as it is, to a friend, because after buying the Turbo I just never chose the Boxster anymore.
Some people look for the best car out there (for their needs) at the time of purchase. I just look for the best Porsche (for my needs); honestly, even if a Z06 is faster/cheaper/prettier/etc., it doesn't matter to me. I don't want a Corvette, or Viper or BMW. Plenty of experience with all of the above, and I respect them all as great cars, and bow to some of them as better performance cars and to all of them as better values than the Porsche. But I wants what I wants...

I thought about the NSX too, but I just can't justify the cost-power ratio. Plus my daily is an 06 TL with a very similar interior, I think that'd bother me over time. I had an E92 M3 and absolutely loved, it just felt very torque anemic. On track it was a different story, but I spend more time commuting than tracking.
I've always loved the Z4M, that is actually what I cross shopped against the M5. It was just too hard to say no to a 6 speed V10 Life's full of decisions. The Bugatti is a glorified VW Beetle
There's always time! 360's are creeping into that range as well, and maintenance is a bit better on those. Been there, loved the car. Literally rocket ship fast. Someday I'll go back, but it'll be a 2012+ model with some of the kinks worked out. For now a good 2012 is in the high $70k to $80k range, which is more than I'd like to spend on a car that will be outdated in 2 model years.

A local Labd Rover dealer has a 996tt X50, mint, low miles. Going to drive it tom to get my first taste and see how bad the bug bites.
I have no intentions of buying that car as it is way overpriced for an '02 ($60k), but not a bad opportunity to see how I like the car.
