I'll ask again ... does removing the cats on a 996 TT increase the smell of gas by any large amount??

Mana,
On my 993 it is not really a problem since the engine is behind me.
On my S2 race car, it was a problem because the cats (and cat pipe) sat right underneath me. There may have been a few leaks in there which might explain a few things about me.

i wouldn't bother doing it on my NA car, but aren't there some sort of penalties for getting caught without them, especially in CA?
There was a big difference in my NA car once these were removed.

I did not notice any increase in gas odor after removing my cats (beyond the smell of the high octane fuel we both use). However, I am not the best judge of such matters, as my sense of smell was largely destroyed by a nasty white substance and the resulting surgical rebuild of my septum.

Yeah, your car became abnoxiously loud and smells like it's leaking gas when driving behind it

All kidding aside, I'd be concerned about too little back pressure on an NA without cats.
