First Drag Racing Experience with my 996TT

Hey Guys,
I've read on here about how bad a drag car the 996tt is. I agree its not what its designed for but I wanted to share my experience with it last weekend.

My car is my daily driver year round. It is amazing and never skips a beat.
I've maybe been to the drag strip 7 times in my life with various vehicles I've owned just to see what they'll do.

I went with hopes that it could run a solid 12.2 or so in the quarter mile as the magazines had tested back in 2001.

When we got there and tech’d in I asked if I could bring a passenger down the track… he said you can only do it if your car is slower than 14.0 and he assumed mine would go 13’s so his advice was to do it on the first run so that I can claim I didn’t know how fast it would go. The track was quite empty so we left and rolled right up to the starting line. With a soft start, two of us in the car and all our stuff for the day it went 12.6 ish on the first pass. I was told I wasn’t allowed a passenger anymore .

There were a lot of V8 powered drag/muscle cars there but they all weren’t street legal/able and came on trailers. The few street cars there were mostly slow and I didn’t pay much attention to them. Then I noticed a bright red Z06 and went and talk to the guy, his was an ’01 like mine and he too drove his every day year round. We agreed we needed to line them up. We pulled into the staging lanes and onto the starting line… a few seconds later and we were off. That Z06 disappeared quickly into my rear view mirror as he ran his best time of 13.1 and I went 12.2. The guy came up to me afterwards and couldn’t believe how badly the Porsche stomped his Vette. After a few passes the announcer started to take notice as I started to take down some of the drag cars…. My times kept getting faster and faster and he had a hard time predicting if they could beat me or not (he often beat against me and lost)…. By now I’m running 11.98 at 118 MPH. I was really starting to get a hold of how to launch it properly and my 0-60ft times were down from my initial 2.0 seconds to 1.9’s and 1.8’s. A few more passes and I had it down to 11.80’s at 119 MPH…. people were taking notice and a lot of gutted big block drag cars with roll bars, plastic windows, dubbed rear ends with slicks were starting to lose to the civil in comparison Porsche. Anyways by the end of the day I ran a 1.7s 0-60 ft time and went 11.794 @ 120 MPH!!! Wow what a car!!!

I went and showed some of my drag racer friends and they didn’t see the humor in it that I did. The Porsche was the fastest car that didn’t have to come on a trailer for the entire day by a long shot…. It also drove home with AC on, cruise control and getting 30 MPH on the highway. What a machine…. I have a whole new respect for it.

Nice job representing. 1.7 60' is very respectable on street tires.

I need to upgrade my clutch, so I can go out and play.

Later, Steve

Thumbs up Launch

Thanks guys!
I found it launched well at 2500 RPM, I slipped the clutch for a few feet and then dumped it. Any higher and the car would axle hop...and lower and it would bog or just not be as fast. I'm running ****ty Kuhmo tires I got used on kijiji when I bought my winter rims. Once I got the hang of it the launch was quite consistent, my 60' times were better than a lot of the cars on full slicks and proper drag suspension. Not bad for a 13 year old car with 150,000 kms on the clock.

Well done. Just confirms that I need to continue my search for a 996TT.

Excellent! The most amazing thing to me is that I have always thought Porsche's to be the very worst cars period for drag racing. They excel on a road course in the twisties or a high speed circuit.

Imagine taking a long wheelbase rail dragster down a twisty canyon canyon road and blowing away most sports cars?

Great job!!! What mods do you have? I daily mine, well I work from home so not much driving, and I just got it flashed. Been wanting to head to the track to try it out. I love the feeling of just rolling to the track and busting out some good times then driving home with the AC blasting. Not much experience with the 996 but plenty in my old supra. I have to agree that the 996 doesn't seem like a drag car but I didn't buy it for that. I wanted a car that I could occasionally take to DE events but still be a nice daily and turbo. Have to say that I am happy with my buy.

Great stories. Been thinking about doing the same for awhile. I won't be as quick as mine is a tip, but it is an X50.

My wife and I keep talking about running it against our E55 wagon. Should be interesting as it has been tuned and has a little over 500hp at the crank.

Be embarrassing to get toasted by my young blonde wife in her station wagon.
