Tiptronic leaking at transfer case

I have been searching and getting very vague results. Now that I have all the issues sorted that purchasing a Pcar with over 80k miles can possibly have, all my mods working nicely together and really starting to enjoy Pcar, Tip decides to pee on my garage floor I swear I have never had so many things go wrong on a vehicle with 80k miles! The appearance of the car is tip top! Now I almost got her mechanically tip top including power window regulators I have found threads with the leak in the same spot so it looks to be the gasket between the Tip and the transfer case. My question is, does the transfer case and tranny share the same fluid? If so, then my tranny will be low and I need to stop driving or top it up, which looks to be interesting to do in itself. I stumbled across a post a week ago that had a link to someone that sells the gaskets that Porsche won't sell I will be pulling it apart and would like to know and have all parts pieces and tools ahead of time. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The fluid is shared between the transfer case and transmission. Most likely the transmission mount has worn/broken down the rubber bushing and has been allowing it to torque under load thus tearing the gasket. So plan on getting the updated 997 mount and having it on hand when you are going to change the gasket. There are also a couple of o-rings in there that you will want to replace as well. I think you can get those at a Mercedes dealer or simply use generic O-rings of the same size. Hope this helps.

I had to change the mount when I first got the car I would love to know the part number for the o rings and find that link to the case gaskets! I will probably end up making them but it would sure be nice to just have them already!

ipttrans.com or ipt performance trans these are older listings that are suppose to have gaskets. Some people can reuse the old gasket along with a sealer to stop leak. Some say Mercedes has gasket some say not. Good luck

Thank you to all who replied.

A special thank you to rabbit1445 for all the info sent in PM's! Rep point your way!

I will be changing the gaskets next weekend. I can clearly see where it's broke and part of the gasket is sticking out the side of transfer case! The only concern now is do I go ahead and change the filter and fluid while I'm in there? With 87xxx miles I think it's a big gamble!

I may not have stayed at a Holiday Inn last night, but I feel like a different person now that I can park for a while and when I leave, my car has not left any oil spots! I jacked her up and removed the transfer case section. Cleaned everything, installed new gaskets, changed the filter and filled her with Pentosin! She shifts great with ZERO NOISES! The fill procedure that I have been reading about and studying did not apply to my Tip! There is no "magical" valve on the drain that closes automatically! I had to "improvise"! I got her full and she shifts better than ever! Don't think I'm qualified to do a write up on it,but, I will be more than happy to share my experience through PM's.

I just received the gaskets in the mail! They were supposed to ship to me on Tuesday but the guy at ITP didn't ship til Wednesday night He never even gave me a courtesy call to let me know after I offered to pay additional shipping and stressed how important it was for me to receive by Saturday! So I made my own gaskets and now have a set in the Market place for sale!

Update... and it's not a good one Two weeks after the repair of the transfer case leak my Tip is slipping 4th and 5th When I called to order the gaskets (which he didn't ship when he said he would) me and the gentleman on the phone had a spirited conversation about changing the filter and new fluid on an automatic with that many miles. He went on to tell me that it was a "myth" that high mileage tranny's tend to fail after a fluid and filter change if it has never been changed. He stated "these aren't your old American cars transmissions"! Well I have confirmed it is NOT A "MYTH"! I knew better when I did it! Should have just topped off the fluid The transmission has shifted flawlessly with zero flares, smooth upshifts and down shifts.

The weird part is how it actually happened. I drove her to work and everything was normal. Took off for lunch, pulled out of my shop, taking off slowly and as speed increased, I noticed it upshifting a little quicker at lower speeds. As she went from 3rd to 4th it "flared" and slipped badly. I have never had an auto give up all at once with zero warning signs

So now I'm trying to decide whether to rebuild this one, exchange for rebuilt unit or get a used one and sell this money pit! I really dont want to sell but damn...it's always something very expensive breaking. I could have almost bought a new one with the money I have spent!

I was always leery about changing filter/fluid in a higher mileage car with no knowledge of whether it had been done on regular basis. I would price out rebuilt and good used unit and think it over. Sorry to hear about this and that your thinking of calling it quits= hang in there. In all fairness looks like you or other owner spent quite a bit on mods.

That would be me! I have spent enough to almost have bought 997tt just since I got her in November! I'm sorta **** about my vehicles and toys. I make everything brand new! I have done all the mods myself and enjoy working on it. But I would like to drive it for a month without some catastrophic failure occurring! By the time I'm finished someone will be getting a real nice like new bullet proof 996tt...lol
