Had a 1999 996... looking to upgrade
I had a tricked out 996 with ROW suspension and Aero Kit, but had a kid and sold it to my uncle in the bay area a few years back... I truly miss the Porsche. My current car is great as far as comfort, to power, to handling ratio, but has been in the shop too much for my liking. Thus I am looking to upgrade... and thinking of either 996 TT or a 997 (.2).
Oh and BTW: I am currently driving a 135i black on black convertible with M-Sport suspension, steering wheel, brakes and seats.
Give me your thoughts please:
Paul

The 996tt does require regular maintenance and can give some headaches now and then with boost/vac leaks etc. But that said one of the best bang for the buck and great looks go for it.
I too had a '99 996 Cab, for 7 years and loved it. I would have kept it forever but someone offered me high retail book in the pit of the recession so I took it. I took the $30K and put it down on an '04 996 Turbo that I've had for over 3 years now. The only repair I've had has been an accumulator ($130.00) that I installed myself. I've done some fun stuff like custom wheels, coilovers, SSK, other than that totally stock.
I did look for 10 months to find the perfect low mile example. Glad I did, my '04 still looks like a year old car and has 26K miles. I drove it hard in the canyons tonight, top down, then out for a brew with an old friend. You know the 996, the design is classic and comfortable, so is the interior. I tried but couldn't warm up to the 997s. I still prefer the 996, they got it right.

I would suggest driving both and looking at total cost of ownership. Then see about your emotional response to the looks of each car (interior/exterior).
You'll know. You can't go wrong with either as a street car.
Full disclosure, I went from a 987S (977 interior) to the 996TT and couldn't be happier.

Good luck in the hunt for your next Porsche and welcome back to the fold!-V
