Buying Car Out of State - Need Feedback
Buying Car Out of State - Need Feedback
Fellow members,
I am in the last phases of buying a car out of state; scheduling an independent PPI in the next week, scheduling shipping and going from there. I will be financing a piece of the car but the rest will be paid in cash (certified check). My question to the members is how does this transaction generally work?
I am obviously going to be overnighting the checks but what is the standard protocols on ensuring the car gets on the truck and shipped as requested?
Do we draft a bill of sale beforehand or what?
Thanks for the help I generally just buy locally or within driving distance but this one is more than halfway across the country.

I'm in NY, flew to Ohio to see the car and PPI in person ("trust but verify"), but all else should be the same.
Agree to price, contingent on PPI
Get PPI
Renegotiate lower price based on every little thing wrong in PPI
Sign sales commitment and wire minimum deposit
Take sales commitment ("yellow") to the bank for financing approval
Send bank check(s) to dealer
Dealer submits to state DMV for new title in your name
Set up overland transport for your car, date pending arrival of title to dealership
Dealer receives title, overnights to you
Overland picks up car and delivers to you while...
You arrange for insurance to be in full effect the day the car arrives
You take title to state DMV, retitle in state (this is where you pay tax, NOTat the dealership), and register in state
Take car to inspection station, if required
Enjoy!

Thanks,
I am buying from private party so when you say sales commitment do you mean bill of sale? I am guessing similar transaction steps. Sign bill of sale and send deposit or full payment and then seller sends title and confirms shipment of the vehicle. I understand the registration part on my end once it gets here.

Not helping whatsoever...
oh, no disrespect meant. do what ya gotta do to get the car! but if you think advice ( or call it admonition lol ) to have several thousand dollars in hand in case of unforseen failures/issues/repairs isn't "helpful". then you don't know the cars.. or "helpfulness". but again and sincerely, good luck
this is as you know a 996turbo forum. you'll learn much from those that have come before you. as have i

Ive owned 2 E60 M5's which are more plagued with issues than these cars but thanks. If you look at rates it actually makes more sense to finance part of these cars and have that extra cash on hand so maybe your contradicting yourself but end of this discussion. Any out of state advice is appreciated.

pffft. see ya
I would go see the car in person as I personally would never buy a car sight unseen or believe it or not sell a car to someone that didn't see it in person. I would give a deposit and bring the rest in cashier check or set it up to wire money. If your not there to have receipt signed by both and notarized you will have to make due with just sellers signature on a pre agreed upon document. And yes he is right plan on a few thousand for the things that come up after purchase= almost always something missed/overlooked. Good luck.
10 yr old car sight unseen I would not buy. No matter how good a service record and a PPI will never be better than in person. For the price of these vehicles used, a plane ticket is a small insurance and would at least help me sleep at night.
