Worked on some 996s today
We did some work on two 996TTs today in my garage. Dustin's (black car) has a EVOMS 600 kit but it has never seemed to run that strong. We used my home made boost leak kit to reveal that it had two HUGE leaks. The passenger side lower boost hose was almost completely off. The second leak we found was a faulty fuel check valve that was allowing boost pressure to escape back into the turbo intake. Markski from 911tuning was able to help identify the leak via some texting. It took us a while to find the leak, we first thought it was a intercooler end cap so we removed the intercooler from the car to check it out. This car just returned from a Porsche mechanic and neither issue was found, unfortunate.
After we finished Dustin's car, we took a lunch break and I gave Dustin a ride in my 996tt with our buddy following behind in his 2010 modded ZR1, 750hp. I did a few pulls at 1.6 bar and the ZR1 couldn't gain any ground on us. To be fair, the ZR1 was running pump gas, not on his E85 tune...probably 700hp. Dustin is hooked and wants to mod his black 996tt.
When we got back from lunch, we started on Whereitsat's white 996. We had to set his wastegates to 18psi and do a boost leak test, no leaks. I used a hand pump to properly set each gate.
It was a long day but we were able to save everyone money by doing some simple tests that most shops do not perform. Thanks for the help Markski and the for the lunch Dustin.

Ainslie is a great teacher, Houston's own Mr. Miyagi. If we didn't boost leak test, we would have never found Dustin's issues. Testing takes all of 30 minutes.
Rob's ZR1 is really nice - war like exhaust sound and when on pump he and Ainslie is are neck and neck. E85, slightly different result...
Best part of the day (besides a free lunch) was watching every one run for cover as my boost leak test plug popped off at 30 psi. Note to self, tighten the hose clamp more and test at 25....

Wish I had a community like that. There's two other Turbo Porsche's in town here. A 991TT and a 997.2tt. Both owners are over 60 and barely drive their cars at all............... let alone work on them!
