valet key?

Is there such a thing as a valet key for 996? I'd like to have a spare without electronics that won't die if I take it swimming. Is the best route to buy a "lighted key head" and just pull the battery? Thanks.

I don't think it would work. I believe that the key not only moves the tumblers, but communicates electronically with the car. It might open the doors, but I don't think it will start the car....I think...

Thanks for the reply Dave... I was hoping the guts of the regular keys were two-part: the remote module, plus the "pill" (?) And that maybe just having the "pill" would be enough?

Did 996s only come with 2 keys, both with remote heads?

The key module while reasonably sealed would not last to repeated water exposure from swimming.

As for a valet key, the RFID pill is encased in the head plastic which seals the RFID pill and then of course the pill is glass which seals the internals against the elements.

After a while though, after repeated water exposure then drying, the valet key head might crack/split as the water dries and salt crystals form. These crystals cause erosion of rocks at the seashore so it would be no trouble for the crystals to widen a crack in the key's head.

(This crystal forming also contributes to coil cracking.)
