Journey to refresh high mileage 96t...
#1
I have always wanted to own a Porsche so when the opportunity arose, I jumped in with both feet...to say the least. I read about issues inherent to the model but decided I was up for the challenge. Wow...what an experience this has been! The first week brought the coolant fitting failure, wheel bearings and on and on. I enjoy rebuilding things I have never worked on before so "it was on"...lol! I hooked up with Markski and got hooked on the freight train pull! I worked hard on replacing almost the entire suspension and enhancing the drivetrain. Finally, after I finished the exterior, save for wheels which I now have a few sets but not the "right ones", I took on the 92,000 mile tired interior! I removed the entire dash and replaced the HVAC unit as to eliminate the foam from blowing out the vents! While it was off i repainted the ac vents and all plastic trim with the Por941 Savannah beige dye. I installed a DCT steering wheel with paddle shifters. We added a Pioneer NEX8000 nav system. I recently found the seats that I like the most (Recaro Top Lines with power, heat ventilation and air lumbar). We stripped the black leather and recovered with Savannah Beige and perforated in the centers. While seats were out I removed the console and all trim pieces and painted them as well. We used a flat clear coat to prevent peeling and scratching. I test drive her today and Wow! I always thought the factory seats were very uncomfortable for highway driving. So, lesson here is, higher mileage cars will for sure require some effort if you want it like new..lol I would really like to say thank you to the people of the forum for their information and sharing experiences that gave me the direction I needed for this project.

I helped here and there but mostly with moral support..lol I have a remodel/refurbish shop fully staffed to remodel luxury Prevost Buses. It took my upholsterer two days to completely redo the seats. I had already purchased the smooth and perforated leather to redo factory seats. I purchased brand new Corbeau seats, but they just didn't fit me. I'm glad I waited and these Top Lines came up! Luckily I was able to sell Corbeaus to one of my employees. Last night I changed out the lower front track/control arms and finally eliminated the last rattle in front end...thank God!!! I think we will test drive to Universal and hang out at MargaritaVille...lol

Hello,
I need to replace the HVAC unit as to eliminate the foam from blowing out the vents as well. Does this mean taking what's left of the old filter and putting a new one back in ? Also, I need to repaint the ac vents and some other plastic parts. What is Por941 Savannah beige dye ? Where do you buy it ? Is there a part number ? My interior is Savanna beige.
Thanks

As far as the HVAC unit, forget all that crap you read about a filter causing the problem. I posted a thread with pictures showing the problem. It is a very tedious job. The entire dash needs to come out and the complete HVAC unit has to come out.
When painting the AC ducts, you can carefully bend the little black fins sideways and remove them completely. If you look real close they are actually numbered so you can mix them up when they come apart. I will warn you now, have some patience as it's not easy.

I used an air spray gun. A "jam" gun. It is small and allows a very small amount of material to be sprayed so you can make it even. For the dash pieces and all plastics we top coated with a flat clear coat that you get from automotive paint stores.
